Part 1. Music of the African Diaspora, Peru Negro, Afro-Peruvian Ambassadors.
The Song-and-Dance ensemble, Peru Negro makes a long-awaited San Diego debut. For most fans in the U.S. Peruvian music means Andean panpipes. While the African presence in such music kingpins as Brazil and Cuba are well known, Peru's African legacy has only recently gained major attention. The slave trade touched nearly every corner of the Americas, from the United States, throughout the Caribbean and South America. It is often thought of as a history of only the Atlantic and Caribbean coast; this horrific legacy reached the pacific coast as well, and lasted in Peru until 1845. Today, descendants of these slaves live in villages and cities along Peru's Pacific coast while their music, rhythms and dance all trace their roots back to West Africa. The most popular village of Afro-Peruvian music is, El Carmen, which lies about 2 hours south of Lima by car. WorldBeat Center was there 8 months ago doing research on AFRICANS In The AMERICAS.
Peru Negro was founded in El Carmen and is recognized around the world as one of the leading exponents of Black Peruvian culture and Black Peruvian pride. Peru Negro was formed on the 26th of Febuary 1969 by the late Ronald Campos de la Colina.
Now Ronaldo's son Ronny Campos is the leader of the group, which boasts over 30 members involved. Peru Negro will perform at the Joan Kroc Performing Arts Center. 6845 University Ave. San Diego. CA. FRIDAY Feb 6th at 7:30 p.m. Please join us and support culture from the African Diaspora in San Diego. Check this group out @ WWW.PERUNEGRO.ORG and WBC's cultural research in Peru @ WWW.WBCMUNDO.ORG
