I believe
that the most important realization that I have come to personally is that - for me - reiki is much more a PHILOSOPHY than a technique. You can find many a reiki "master" that will sign you up for an epic weekend-long class with further requirements to return for workshops that even a note from your mother will not excuse you from, and all of this work usually takes a second mortgage on the house just to get started.
First of all, some people unfortunately go into the "business" of reiki. And secondly, reiki is a very VERY personal thing. No one should ever be
made to feel as though they need to be doing reiki as another does reiki -
even if that person is a "master". We all have the potential to be masters, but
the catch is that you are NEVER anyone's master but your own. At best, I am the catalyst by which someone else comes into more intimate contact with their own innate healing energy.
As you can see, I have very non-traditional views as far as my reiki practice
goes: I believe that the student - NOT the teacher - is in charge of their
learning (i.e. - when, how much at a time, how frequently they return for
follow-ups, how quickly they move forward, etc.). I believe that the student -
NOT the "master" - is their own best teacher. I believe that - in Reiki - you
learn by doing.
Reiki has a mind of it's own, and it knows what it needs to do - there is
NOTHING you can do wrong. I believe that Reiki is much more about feeling
than knowing. I believe that perpetuating the myth that the symbols are
sacred and treating them with something close to paranoia is detrimental to
reiki in that it takes the focus off of what really matters: a clear sincere INTENT
to heal. I believe that INTENT is the most important tool in Reiki along with
INTUITION, and that learning to implement the latter tool is one of the greatest benefits of walking the healing path. You MUST get in touch with that part of yourself that is aware of the innate healing gifts that you carry - the part of you that just KNOWS.
