There's a
house on Skinner Hill where Louie used to live
He went back for a letter he'd forgotten
Lou raised a hand to ring the bell, but Sam was at the
door
Her hair and lips were red, her bathrobe cotton
"Come on in," her smile said, "There's
nobody home but me.
Could it be you want this letter in the doorway?"
Lou was weak and went inside, he followed Sam upstairs
And said to her, "It seems I'm headed your way"
Sam replied, "Let's seize the day before it
disappears
Or hides away behind a veil of tears"
Lou perused a sketchbook Sam kept beneath her bed
It was filled with views of bikers wearing leather
Sam slid into vinyl pants while Lou was looking on
She said, "I like the beach with all its
weather"
Lou was game, he led the way to a bike with fifteen gears
Sam said, "You can pull me in a trailer"
So they pedaled to the shore as a rain began to fall
But stopped for some advice from a wayward sailor
He said, "A storm is cooking and more wet than it
appears
Unless you're looking through a veil of tears"
Lou observed, "It's getting dark. The rain is
falling hard.
I think I see some shelter on the corner"
"Maybe that's okay with you, but I've got other
plans"
Said Sam, resisting all attempts to warn her
Sam went off into the storm, her red hair like a torch
light
Her leather jacket soaked across the shoulders
Lou stayed back and watched her as she headed for the
shore
Until she walked away beyond some boulders
He thought he heard the crashing of surf against the
piers
Or else the splashing of a veil of tears
Lou was getting anxious when Sam did not return
Then decided she was just a source of tension
So he got back on his bicycle, then saw a flash of red
And heard the sound of a motorcycle engine
Lou got back at midnight to the house on Skinner Hill
His demeanor somewhat worse than he was hopin'
Waiting in the doorway was the envelope he left
He picked it up and tore the letter open
The message said, "Poor baby, you're wet behind the
ears.
Was it rain or maybe just a veil of tears?" |
