כתב היד ברור למדי, אלא שבגלל אי-הרגילות לצורת האותיות הזאת אני צריך לפענח אותו שורה מול שורה, לפני שאוכל לנסות לתרגם אותו.

One day, someone posted on one of the mailing lists:
"Is there anyone on the list who can translate Aramaic. I have a small project (seems like a contract in two pages) that needs quick attention."
So I wrote to the poster:
written in hebrew letters, i suppose? into what?
i am dawid wiskott
translator into hebrew and german,
also from english and yiddish, sometimes danish
The answer came at once:
"It is written in Hebrew characters and I need it translated into English. May I fax it to you?"
And I replied:
"You may. I am quite familiar with Jewish Aramaic. As you see in my signature, I don't advertise myself for translation into English. You will have to polish what I send you."
In came the source, as pdf -- the two handwritten pages displayed above, the left-hand one first, but when I deciphered them it turned out to be the second of the two pages. You can see them in readable size if you click on them.
The customer asked how long it would take me. I looked at the document and wrote back:
"The handwriting is clear enough, but I have to decipher and copy it before I can start to write a translation. This is not going to be a two-hour night quickie as I first thought. Don't commit yourself to a deadline closer than 24 hours; I will do what I can to deliver earlier."
Then I was advised to wait for an approval, which never came.
But some hours later a fellow translator established contact between me and a client of his who had a job that my acquaintance could not handle.
So I got the same pdf file twice more -- once from my acquaintance, to make sure I could read it, and once from the client, with his purchase order.

Hebrew pure and simple, no clumsy Aramaic. But what subject-matter! A Hogwarts textbook, perhaps?
אכן שפה דומה לארמית, לפחות יותר משהיא דומה לאנגלית. הכתב נראה בעיני ההדיוטיות כמו ספרדי-מאוחר. והתוכן -- מוזר ומשונה מאין כמוהו.

Well, here it is together with my translation, line by line. As I told the customer, my English aims not at elegance but at faithful proximity to the Hebrew, even down to word-order as far as possible (no further than that, I hope), for the benefit of the antiquarian and the student of wizardry.

And this bowl also cover with a lid of the said wood that it cover the hole and put it away in a hidden place with the blood, so that it be not seen even unto you, for 9 days. And after these 9 days are over, untie the lid, and you will find the blood has been turned to worms. And cover it once [again] and close it like the first time so that it be not seen for another 9 days.
