Roy Joins Wespa
Roy Kietzman's membership application has been accepted in the World English-language Scrabble Players Association. So far only one other individual member is on the roster: Joel Sherman in the US. Individual membership is accepted in countries where national organisations aren't yet members. We're hoping the Bahrain Scrabble League will be able to join later in the year.
Yateem Centre OK for Mario Challenge
The general manager of Yateem Centre has given the green light for having the Super Mario Challenge on December 15 at the Manama shopping centre.

2 New Committee Members
The Bahrain Scrabble League committee co-opted two members to join it: Ben Filio and Mohammed Zafar, to replace Adeeb Ahmad and Shiraz Amith who’ve been unable these past months to devote themselves to Scrabble biz though we do expect that they’ll certainly continue to play in tournaments.
Akshay to Get Married
Akshay Bhandarkar gets married on August 15 in Mumbai. His parents, sister Preeti and granddad - all living in Dubai - have headed for India for the wedding ceremonies and reception. His bride-to-be is also Mumbai, and she occasionally plays Scrabble. Shiraz Amith has written a poem which has gone onto the gulf Scrabble Yahoo! group site as well as the sowpods site.
Super Mario in Comeback
Mario Ranasuriya “would absolutely love to have a tournament” to compete in while visiting the Kingdom in December. An international Scrabble competition has been proposed for December 15 in Bahrain with the 19-year-old the featured player.
“I’ve been very active playing Scrabble on line,” he says, “so I’m not completely out of touch, and I might still be able to give my old rivals a good fight. I was very flattered when I heard that a contest was being considered just because I made plans” to be in Bahrain.
When Roy Kietzman heard from the parents that Mario was coming back for a visit in December, that seemed a definite occasion to organise a competition. Besides university studies in Canada, he’s working for the marketing agency representing the Royal Bank of Canada.
Youngest ever in WSC
At 14, Mario represented Bahrain as the youngest entrant ever in the World Scrabble Championship, in 2001 in the USA, garnering media attention including an article in Reader’s Digest. He was the Bahrain champion four years ago but left the competitive Scrabble scene and the Kingdom to concentrate on university studies.
Adult players were so amazed with the Scrabble feats of the preteen in the early ‘90s that they dubbed him Super Mario, a moniker the youngster quietly moaned about. When Ishtiaq Chishty learned that Mario intends to make a comeback to the Scrabble scene in December, he announced he’s ready to fly to Bahrain, bringing with him other overseas competitors. The Bahrain Scrabble League committee has to work out details for the tourney which is likely to be a full-day seven- or eight-round tournament titled the Super Mario Challenge.
Rolling Trophy Rolls Away
A rolling trophy has mysteriously seemed to roll into obscurity. When the Bahrain Scrabble League 37th Scrabble awards programme was held last June, the Bhandarkar bingo cup had gone missing. The previous recipient of the trophy, Adeeb Ahmad, said he delivered the cup to Rasheed Trophies for engraving for the next winner.
However, when a half dozen trophies were put on display at the playoffs awards dinner, the Bhandarkar cup, given by the Ashok Bhandarkar family six years ago, was not there. Investigations have failed to turn up the award. Google alert had the article posted.
