Abe, The Poor Man's Poet
A poet knows not, day or night
And not always, wrong from right
But, without the poet’s written word
Think of all, we mightn’t heard.

Cool Hand Luke
Paul Leonard Newman
January 26 1925; September 26 2008

He was a quiet, private, Man
But, a giant, amongst the stars
A philanthropist to millions
And owned and drove racecars.

He was a producer and director
And an actor, beyond, compare
He won almost every award
A great talent, one, so rare.

His great films will last forever
For, new generations to see
And he will always be with us
In the pages, of our history.

He always said, he was just lucky
But, it was us, who were blessed
For, while he was in this World
He passed almost every, Earthly test.

The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp
Serving, those Children who are ill
Where they could have fun, just be a Kid
One of those dreams, he did fulfill.

He was a family man, first of all
Married to Joanne fifty years
And he has left, each one of us
Filled, with memories, grief, and tears.

Survived by Joanne and five Daughters
His Son, Scott, he’s gone to see
He’s broken the bounds of this Earth
And from his suffering, set free.

He’s gone, to a much better place
And, I’ll bet he’s looking down
With sparkling eyes, and famous grin
And saying, “I’ll always be around!”

Rest in peace, Paul.

Maybe We Should

Maybe We Should –
Have ourselves an “adjustment”
And let the fat cats feel the pain
To bring our economy in line
And not let, this happen again.

Maybe We Should -
Get rid of the Federal Reserve
Which is illegal, anyway
President Kennedy gave a decree (I)
And said, they should go away.

Maybe We Should –
Make sure all the people know
We all pay interest on our money
Which is printed/owned by the banks (II)
For them, a bottomless, jar of honey.

Maybe We Should -
End the unlawful income tax
And charge a flat tax on all spent (III)
Except for food and such things
And house payments, and rent.

Maybe We Should -
Vote every incumbent out
Forget our political persuasion
Vote in new folks who really care
About the future, of our Nation.

Maybe We Should –
Get rid of the electoral vote
And the flawed voting machines
Make everybody’s vote count
So, they can’t win, by any, means.

Maybe We Should -
End foreign aid to unfriendly nations
Spend that money, here at home
Quit bankrolling those foreigners
And start, to take care of our own.

Maybe We Should -
Stop all subsidies for companies (IV) (V)
And tax breaks for all the wealthy
Spend that money, on other programs
That teach kids, and keep us safe and healthy.

Maybe We Should -
Make companies who go bust
And those invested in that kind
Suffer the consequence of their acts
Along with CEOs who rob them blind.(VI)

Maybe We Should -
Quit turning a blind eye to those
Who commit, white-collar crime
Make them pay back the piper
And make them all, do the time.

Maybe We Should -
End our dependence on oil
And go for the alternatives
Like wind power and solar
With no charge, for what it gives.

Maybe We Should -
Get out of groups like the WTO (VII)
Where we buy more than we can sell
When we complain about poisoned stuff
And they just tell us, “Go to hell!”

Maybe We Should -
Have someone that we can trust
To find products, which make us ill
Not, protecting those who sell them
Who don’t care, who they may kill.

Maybe We Should -
Make it against our Nation’s law
To send our jobs, overseas
And, when we make a phone call
That, “Press one, for English, please.”

Maybe We Should –
Let no one be, above the Law
From our President, on down
As long as we let them get away
True Justice, never will be found.

Maybe We Should –
Fire those inept, prosecutors
Who put our Border Guards in prison
We can thank, those like Johnny Sutton
For how, border violence has risen.

Maybe We Should -
Realize, we do have a problem
With our World’s global warning
The worsening of our storms
Is, Mother Nature’s warning.

Maybe We Should -
Quit trying to change the World
And, forcing our Democracy
In places it will never work
First, make it work for you and me.

Maybe We Should -
End the spying on our people
It’s against our Constitution
And loss of habeas corpus
Is surely wrong, and no solution.

Maybe We Should -
Bring our Troops back home
And, have them guard our border
Stop all illegals coming in
And enforce our Law and Order.

Maybe We Should -
Stop going to War on a whim
For propaganda, lies, and fear (VIII )
For, every time we do it
Our apocalypse, draws nearer.

Maybe We Should -
Learn about the New World Order (IX)
(Some say, there is nothing to fear)
When, the rich will have all the power
Though maybe, that time’s already here!

Maybe We Should –
Quit buying things that we don’t need
And try to live within our means
Even when those crooked lenders say
“We’re the answer to your dreams!”

Maybe We Should -
Get our own house in order
And try, to take care of our own
Then, we might again be thought of
The greatest, this World has known.

Our Constitution's Birthday
(September 17, 2008)

 In the year, Seventeen eighty-seven
Those thirty-nine, changed our History
They signed that piece of parchment
Said, we were, the Land of the Free.

In more than two hundred twenty years
It has gone through a few changes
That's not, an easy thing to get done
For, all of our lives, it rearranges.

The First through Tenth Amendments
Are known as our Bill of Rights
And many times, they were in danger
But, the People, usually won those fights.

Sometimes, those people in power
Try to change them, for their gain
Sometimes they will just ignore them
Like we've seen, time and again.

They are our only, real protection
With a high and terrible price to pay
If we don't keep fighting for them
There's some, would take them all away.

Other Amendments, Thirteen and Fifteen
Abolished Racial Suffrage and Slavery
Supposed to give promised Rights
To all of those promised, Liberty.

The Sixteenth, allowed for Income Tax
And as we know, it has many a flaw
Some say, that it was never Ratified
That, it was never made, a Legal Law.

The Eighteenth, Prohibition of Alcohol
Which was, another legal blunder
With organized crime borne of it
And, the Rule of Law torn, asunder.

The Nineteenth, said Women could Vote
After a very long, contentious fight
Just look at what those Ladies have done
Since, they got their, American Right.

Then, a Repeal of Prohibition
Came with the Twenty-first
In most places, booze flowed freely
To quench America's, hearty thirst.

The Twenty-second said, Two Terms
Was, all a President could serve
But, as we know, for some, one
Was one more, than they deserved.

The Twenty-sixth said we could Vote
When reaching Eighteen years of age
Since they could fight and die for us
Every time, we had a War to wage.

Those great words of our Constitution
Have served our Country long, and well
Will they withstand the test of time
Or will History show, our Nation, fell?

If we don't protect them with our life
If we bow to those powers that, be
If we let them twist those words around
One sad day, we'll be no longer, Free.

We can't let our precious Bill of Rights
Fail, to protect us all, as they must do
We can't let one man, or group of men
Twist them into something, they construe.

Though, our Constitution is not perfect
Our Founding Fathers knew, this so
And, "In God We Trust", is not enough
Our Freedom depends, on where, we go.

We must each, defend those Freedoms
From outside foes, and those, within
It's, We, the People, wield the power
To lose this battle, which, we must, win.

So, On this Constitution Day
Let's each, pay the price we owe
To uphold those words of Wisdom
Penned upon that parchment, long ago.

POW/MIA Remembrance Day
(Third Friday of September)

Thousands are still missing
From those Wars of the past
Slowly, some are coming home
To grieving Families, at last.

Some found in unmarked graves
On foreign lands across the sea
With the science of DNA
To reveal, their true identity.

JPAC was formed to find them
Around fourteen hundred, to date
And for loved ones seeking closure
It surely, never is, too late.

They think, forty thousand left
They might be able to recover
As they follow leads and tips
From, one country to another.

Some remains, may be lost forever
Like those Heroes, resting in the Deep
But, to bring those others home
Is a solemn promise, we must keep.

It’s a very noble thing they do
As, they go, and search, and find
Those, who died for our Country
For, we must, leave no one behind.

Every year we have a special day
To, remember those still lost
To, renew that promise to them
No matter what, it may cost.

Peace Or War?

Yet, another year has passed by
Since, those terrorists struck our Land
Even, after all this time gone by
Still hard, to comprehend or understand.

How can a person hate so much
And be so blinded, by their belief
To take their life, and so many others
To cause such terror, pain, and grief ?

All those folks they didn’t even know
Who never caused them any harm
Who died while just living their lives
Without, any forewarning or alarm.

Sadly, since that “War” began
Many thousands more, have died
And those who shed tears on Nine Eleven
Just some, of too many, who have cried.

The man who caused all that horror
Still walks free, to wreak his wrath
And, it seems that, so many more
Now, walk along that deadly path.

Our World is forever changed
And it will never, be the same
Sad, such evil lives among us
Especially, in religion’s name.

Voices calling for Goodwill and Peace
Are drowned out, by the drums of War
And the destruction of all Mankind
It seems is all, we really, are good for?

Oh, we must protect ourselves
And, the terrorism must be fought
And all of those, who cause us harm
Must get justice, due, when caught.

So, on Nine Eleven, we’ll remember
Souls lost then, and since, that fateful day
And, if you believe in, some kind of God
You should ask for Peace too, if you pray!

Transitions

Since the year Seventeen eighty-nine
When George Washington was sworn in
There was the promise of America
That was finally, about to begin.

Wise men wrote our Constitution
And declared, our Independence
They said, all people were equal
With those words, not given license.

We were a young, fledgling Nation
Trying to figure the right way
To control our new Democracy
Which, we still struggle with, today.

We opened wide, freedom’s door
And asked all oppressed to come
But still, we had so many things
Which were unfinished, left undone.

The Women, who were our backbone
Were not allowed a say, to vote
Relegated to the home and kids
With no rights, a sad, historic note.

Not until, Nineteen and twenty
Did they finally win the fight
To that promise from America
Where we claimed, all, had that right.

We allowed people to own people
And turned a blind eye, to that blight
And it took our terrible, Civil War
To make us, finally, see the light.

Those freed by Lincoln’s Proclamations
In Eighteen sixty-two and sixty-three
Soon learned, freedom was a state of mind
And found, they still weren’t, truly, free.

The States still had their own laws
And many said, there was no way
To allow Blacks in the voting booth
To register, or to have their say.

Forty-five years after the Women
There was finally Federal legislation
That guaranteed all would have a voice
As to who, and how we ran our Nation.

Equal Rights for all Americans
Is still an imperfect, process
Sometimes, it seems we backtrack
As the rich get more, the poor get less.

We now have a Black Man running
And a Woman, for number two
Some said, it would never happen
But, change, is what Americans do.

This Great Experiment of Democracy
Has surely come, a long, long, way
But, if we don’t protect those Freedoms
We can’t afford the price, we’ll pay.

Our Country is at a crossroads
And only History books, will tell
If we had the will, up to the task
And, if we really, did it, well!

It’s an honor and our solemn duty
To cast our vote for our belief
And party lines aren’t always true
And may cause us pain and grief.

Our two party system worked awhile
But, has caused so much division
Not always, the best for the People
And, it’s time for some, revision.

Vote, for what, you know is right
Even, if some say you’re wrong
Like it was, in our beginning
When we were young, proud, and strong.

Either way, we will make, history
With the election, in November
Let’s hope we make the right choice
On a day, we will, want, to remember.

From There, To Here?

I hope the American people
Are so proud of what we've done
To take that Communist country
And, help make it, number one.

And, think of all those Indians
Who have jobs with decent pay
I guess that is the upside
To all those jobs we give away.

We have paid for those palaces
With gold fixtures in their bath
Sure, those Saudis really love us
As long, as we stay on this path.

We have all the technology
To get us off those fossil fuels
But, some people just don't get it
Or are afraid, to break old rules.

The Japanese learned our ways
Build cars better than we can
After, we rebuilt old enemies
With that infamous, Marshall Plan.

We have left our borders open
To our neighbor to the south
So they could work for nothing
To put, the food in our mouth.

Most don't pay any taxes
But get, most our benefits
Sometimes, "illegal alien"
Is almost, as good as it gets!

Our Pres gazed into his eyes
And looked into his soul
But, not deep enough, I guess
To see that Russian's goal.

We invaded a sovereign nation
And now, we say, that isn't right!
When, they went into Georgia
I guess, we finally saw the light.

We try to play the good guy
Show the rest, the "righteous" way
We put bad people into power
In other countries, then we pay.

Our Country, the best in the World
Leaves homeless people in the street
Lets people die cause they can't pay
That, health (?) system, we can't beat.

We have children killing children
In, an education system, broken
With far too many classrooms
With our English, barely spoken.

There's the so-called "war on drugs"
That only, seems to know, the jailing
And puts our border guards in prison
With, our so-called "justice", failing.

We have agencies, the FDA
Is one, that comes to mind
Like so very many others
That are, deaf, dumb, and blind.

We have allowed human torture
"The end, justifies the means!"
Let our Government spy on us
Our Constitution, that, demeans.

It seems the almighty dollar
With motto, "In God We Trust"
Is not so mighty, anymore
And may, make us, go bust.

We have all those politicians
Who serve for their personal gain
Some cheat, and lie, and steal
Yet, we vote them in again.

It seems we will never learn
That the People must, control
If our Nation has hope to survive
That must be, the American goal!

In our very, brief history
We have accomplished much
A lot of good, for all peoples
But, seems we've lost that touch.

We are in a downward spiral
And nobody, seems to care
Someday we all will wonder
How, we got here from there?

Let's Build The US Peace Memorial

We have memorials for heroes
Who have fought in wars and died
For great generals and others
To express our nations pride.

From the American Revolution
Until the wars we fight today
Where we honor those people
For, the ultimate price, they pay.

We have statues of politicians
And the leaders of our land
Monuments for almost everything
Some small, some huge and grand.

They are made of stone - cast in bronze
Carved in mountainsides and wood
Some are fanciful, some somber
As we celebrate all those, we should.

But, if you just think about it
And if you search, everywhere
You will see that one is missing
And sadly, so many don’t seem to care.

Where do we credit all those folks
Who stand for peace and good will
Who speak out against those wars
That maim, destroy and kill?

Some will say, “It’s unpatriotic!”
To try to find a different course
To resolve the worlds conflict
With sane and rational discourse.

“They don’t support the troops!”
“They want to give up and surrender!”
“They don’t want to fight for freedom!”
“It’s just passive words, they tender!?

That could not be further from the truth
It’s because, they, honestly do care
What’s wrong with peaceful resolution
Especially, when it is just and fair?

Let us all honor those peacekeepers
Who would strive to find a better way
To resolve the worlds differences
And end, the terrible price we all pay.

They deserve their own monument
For their valiant fight against all war
Striving for world peace and freedom
Isn’t that, what America stands for?

So, let's build the US Peace Memorial
For people of the world to come and see
The people of our nation, long for peace
Across every land, where all live free.

I received this about the preceding which I thought was nice.

Abe,

Again you have brightened this day
  by giving others a way;
To look, to see, to know
that there are many ways to go.

One does not have to die
   to make this Nation cheer;
One only has to feel Peace
and that can bring the tear.

For Abe who says it best
he brings us all to test
if we are ready to smile
and give peace the extra mile.

In appreciation to Abe....a friend always,

Ron Kevern

Retired Sergeant 1st Class Henry Ford Perkins, 80, of Dickson, TN, passed away on Saturday, August 9th, 2008.
SFC Henry F. Perkins, US Army, served 2 combat tours in Vietnam, a tour in Korea. He was a member of VFW Post 4641 of Dickson and was very active in the VFW Honor Guard in assisting families with Military rights at the graveside.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Perkins, two sons and three daughters.

SFC Henry F. Perkins
A Soldier’s Soldier

We have lost another great one
Who can never be replaced
He will  be missed here on Earth
Though, he’s gone to a better place.

Everybody who met Henry
Knew, they’d met a special man
Always helping, when he could
With Veterans always, in his plan.

He was selfless in his Service
For all others, who had Served
And he always tried to make sure
They got all he felt, they deserved.

A true Patriot in every sense
Sergeant First Class in the Army
And as their famous motto says
He was always, all that he could be.

Two combat tours in Vietnam
And one tour in Korea, too
A lifetime member of the VFW
When his Active Duty, was through.

A member of the Honor Guard
Assisting Families of those passed
Doing all he could to ease their pain
Because that’s how, his die was cast.

Survived by, loving Wife Patsy
Three Daughters and two Sons
As he leaves on his journey
To that voice above, that hearkens.

Now, the time has come to Honor him
With all the praise that he deserved
So, the memory of this Great Man
Will, for now and always be, preserved.

Rest In Peace, Henry

 Is, “Thank You!” Near Enough?

We need to thank all those Vets
In the Service of me and you
Not nearly, enough credit given
For, all of those things they do.

They leave loved ones here at home
And are gone, for months on end
Never knowing if, they will return
Or, what danger lay, around the bend.

They face the dangers caused by war
They see the horror and heartbreak
Of their Comrades killed or wounded
Where death can come from, one mistake.

They go to places round the World
Most of us will never (or want to) see
They go there and do the dirty work
In far-off countries, across the sea.

The Army, Air Force, and the Navy
And the United States Marine Corp
Serving in the name of our Nation
To open, or keep open, Freedom’s door.

They sleep upon the cold hard ground
And sweat through the heat of day
With the sand and bullets flying
Or some booby trap along their way.

Sometimes, they must try to make do
With equipment that’s not good enough
Buy their own, flak jackets and armor
That are made of the right stuff.

We should never send them off to war
Unless we give them, the very best
But even so, with what they have
They will always try to do their best.

We shouldn’t keep them over there
Any longer, than we tell them, we will
And we shouldn’t keep sending them back
After we know, they have had their fill.

And other promises that we make
Should be kept, no matter the cost
And we should help them find their way
When they return home and feel so lost.

We should never make them suffer
With experiments from our own side
And then, deny that we ever did it
Like Agent Orange!  Where is our pride?

Seems we are always in some war
And always send our best young to fight
Maybe, if we sent the oldest first
We just might, finally see the light!

Every citizen should serve some time
In some kind of service or, another
If every family had a member, “in”
Instead of war, I bet we’d find some other.

So when you see one in a Uniform
Just take a moment, tell them, “Thanks!”
To let them know, we really care about
All those proudly serving, in the Ranks.

 A New World Order?

I sign a lot of petitions
(No, not the "forwarded" kind)
I sign letters from some sites
And add some words from my mind.

I try to be involved
(Not, as much as I could)
We could change things around
If more people, only would.

For some, it is apathy
And some, I'm sure, are scared
But, how will they know what you want
If, your thoughts are never shared.

Americans used to care about
Our Country and were proud
When things were what they didn't like
They spoke their mind out loud.

We can't do it at the polls
We vote, then we walk away
Those who represent (?) us
Can't hear us, if we don't say!

We must stay on their butts
And watch them all the time
Demand an "honest" days work
For that payroll, from yours and mine.

When they steal from us
They should be sent to jail
If enough of us demand it
Maybe justice would prevail.

But, we cast our vote
And then, we turn them free
Never, making them account
To the folks, like you and me.

What happened to that pride
That, once felt, across our Land?
When will we take our Nation back?
We might be facing, the last stand!

We have let the rule of law
Be twisted all around
And, political correctness
Has left us gagged and bound.

The New World Order
Will, one day, enslave us all
But, guess we will deserve it
Because, we let Freedom fall.

Google "New World Order" and what you read should scare you!!

 Silence of Sounds

Sitting listening to the sound
A bit of old rock and roll
From those years gone past
That, still rock my soul!

Thinking of the people
They remind me about
All the music friends I had
Are so hard to do without.

Music is the one thing
No matter what the weather
That seems to touch the heart
And, bring people together.

It’s such a very simple thing
Just, thoughts and words and rhyme
Put together in such a way
That makes people, feel, just fine.

Put an instrument or two
With, a good time drummer
A sweet voice to sing it all
You could end up, with one hummer.

Sometimes just one string
Can make all you need
But, when they strum another
You
