The First Cornish Rex in the United States
The first Cornish Rex came to America in 1957 when Fran Blancheri of San Diego
imported a daughter of Poldhu, LaMorna Cove, and her half brother, Pendennis
Castle. Pendennis Castle died shortly after arrival without having sired any
kittens. LaMorna Cove had been bred to Poldhu before leaving England and gave
birth to four Cornish Rex kittens, which were the first Cornish Rex born in
America. Two of these kittens, Diamond Lil and Marmaduke, became the foundation
for the Cornish Rex breed in America.
As the breed developed in the United States, the cats used for outcrosses
included many breeds. Among them were some of the more svelte breeds, including
the Siamese, so the foreign-type body became a feature of the American cat that
distinguished it from the British cats. Outcrossing with the Siamese also added
the Siamese pattern to the Cornish Rex breed.
