Hypoallergenic?
Cornish Rex cats have been described as a hypoallergenic breed, but this is not
entirely true. Although it is commonly believed that allergic reactions are
caused by a cat's hair, the source of the allergic reaction is a protein in the
cat's saliva. When the cat grooms itself, the cat deposits the protein on its
skin and hair.
Because of their lack of guard hairs, Cornish Rex tend to shed less than do
other breeds of cats. This goes a long way in controlling the amount of
allergen in the environment. Some people with mild allergies find that they can
tolerate the Cornish Rex. For others, the breed provokes the same reactions as
any other breed. Unfortunately, there is no easy method of determining into
which category someone fits.
An allergic individual should discuss his or her situation with a breeder before
obtaining a Cornish Rex as a pet. Consideration should be given to adopting an
older animal that would be better able to adjust if things don't work out. It
is unfair for a little kitten to be bounced from home to home.
