Mississippi Settlement Relative Dies on February 4 at 95

MANSFIELD, LA - Graveside services for Evelyn Smith Valentine, 95, will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2005 at Highland Cemetery in Mansfield, LA. Officiating will be Rev. Irvin Boudreaux, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Mansfield, LA.

The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Chapel in Mansfield, Sunday, February 6, 2005 beginning at 1:00 p.m until service time.

Evelyn passed away Friday, February 4, 2005 at Desoto Regional Health System from an long illness. She was born in Pleasant Hill, LA and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by husband, W.T.(Walter Tom) Valentine; son, Thomas Charles Valentine; parents, Corinne Rembert Smith and Art Smith; two brothers, Roberts Lamar Smith and James Boyd Smith; two daughters-in-law, Billie Valentine and Celeste Valentine.

She is survived by one son, Kermie Valentine of Mansfield, LA; five grandchildren, June Langford of Shreveport, LA, Beth Adams, Rhonny Valentine and Judson Rives all of Mansfield, LA and Mike Rives of Grand Cane, LA; 12 great grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, LA.

Pelican Native Dies in East Texas

Burton George Burns


CENTER, TX - Burton George Burns, 81, of Center passed away Wednesday evening at Promise Specialty Hospital in Shreveport, LA. He was born June 19, 1923 in Pelican, LA to Lonnie and Donnie Burns. Mr. Burns served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Mansfield Baptist Church in Mansfield, LA.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2005 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home, Bro. Mike Stewart will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Smith Cemetery in Shelby County.

Pallbearers will be Ray Paxton, Tommy Burns, Gary Burns, Greg Burns, Lane Burns, Keith Foshee, Vic Burns and Jimmy Burns.

Honorary pallbearers will be Billy De Soto, Kenny Burns, Logan Burns, Robert Burns and Randy Burns.

Survivors include his daughters: Sandra Martin of Sibley, LA and Sue Foshee of Mansfield, LA; sons: Hayward Burns and wife Connie of Benton, LA; Terry Burns and wife Annette of Logansport, LA; Steve Burns of Joaquin; Mark Burns and wife Terri of Mansfield, LA and Kevin Burns of Mansfield, LA; sisters: Mary De Soto of Shreveport, LA; Helen Thomas of Shreveport, LA and Marie La Tona of Maine, fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Streetman Burns; three brothers: Bill Burns, Roy Lee Burns and Raymond Burns; and two sisters: Nora Paxton and Barbara Lanell Burns. Watson & Sons Funeral Home

Funeral services for Mrs. Faye Williams Auger, age 85, of Oak Grove, LA, will be 2:00 PM Monday, January 31, 2005 at the Green Baptist Church Oak Grove, LA, with Rev. Fred Hale officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery Oak Grove, LA, under the direction of Cox Funeral Home Oak Grove, LA.


Mrs. Auger was born on February 17, 1919 and passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2005 in Oak Grove, LA.
Mrs. Auger was a member of the Green Baptist Church in Oak Grove. She and her hus band were founding members of the Calvary Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was farmer and loved to grow her flower gardens.


She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Willard Auger Sr., son, Sheriff T.W. Auger Jr.

Mississippi Relative of the Welborn Family Dies

Herman L. Welborn, 74, of Soso, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, with burial in Union Line Cemetery in Jones County. The Rev. Nonnie Jefcoat will officiate.

He was a life-time cattle farmer. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 415, Union Lodge in Soso and American Legion Post 102, Soso. He was a life member of the VFW of Bay Springs. He was a member of Soso Order of Eastern Star and a trustee of Union Line Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Michael Welborn.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Doris Jefcoat Welborn of Soso; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Douglas Gray of Soso; his grandchildren, Brandi Gray and Brandon Gray, both of Soso; his grandchildren, Brandi Gray and Brandon Gray both of Soso; his brother, J. Joe Welborn of Soso; his sister, Molly Blackledge of Soso; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Stanley Todd of Soso; and his mother-in-law, Lillie Mae Jefcoat of Soso.

Pallbearers will be Larry Todd, Steven Todd, Hershell Welborn Jr., Bobby Williamson, John L. Terrell and Randy Gray.

Honorary pallbearers will be members the Soso Masonic Lodge and the Soso American Legion.

rankinotes: Those who lived in the Mississippi Settlement of DeSoto Parish, and others, will remember the large Welborn family presence there. Richard Johnston informed rankinotes of Herman's death on December 7. He had developed a rapport with the Welborns.

Johnston/Davis/Mississippi Settlement Descendant Dies

Shreveport, LA - BOSSIER CITY, LA- Services will be conducted at Centuries Funeral Home Chapel for Linda Davis Thompson, age 59 of Bossier City, LA on Monday, November 29, 2004 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Dr. Randy Harper, Pastor of Bellaire Baptist Church where Mrs. Thompson was a member and a member of Naomi Sunday School Class. Interment to follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Thompson entered into rest on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at her daughter's residence. She was born in Shreveport and remained a resident of the Shreveport/Bossier City area for the most of her life. She was a retired letter carrier with 21 years of service, and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Most of all she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother (Grammy), and sister.

She was preceded in death be her parents, Ernest and Dezzie Davis, her husband, Melvin, four siblings, Carolyn Barber, Betty Brookins, Tommy Davis, Ernie Davis. She is survived by four daughters, Julie Beckham of Bossier City, LA, Stacey Daniels and husband Bill of Benton, LA, Sheryl McNeill and husband Kevin of Bossier City, LA, and Debra Gilmore and husband Russell if Biloxi, MA; two sisters, Virginia Slayton and husband Leon, and Katie Dolin and husband George, all of Shreveport, LA; two brothers, Robert C. Davis and wife Carmen of San Diego, CA., and E. Jack Davis and wife Betty of Shreveport, LA; seven grandchildren, Cameron Beckham, Jake Beckham, Riley Daniels, Garrett Jennings, Holden Gilmore, Ashlyn Gilmore, and Carson Gilmore.

Pallbearers will be Rupert Procell, Carter Mattis, S.C. Powell, Chad Dryden, Chris Williams, Kenny Vierdag. Memorials may be made to Christus Schumpert Hospice. The family would like to thank Dr. Stuart Lebas, Robyn Watkins, RN and her many friends for their loving care.

Some in the Rankin family will remember Thurman Davis. He came to our home at times at the old Johniken Homestead where we lived. I saw him while at Louisiana College in the late 50s. His son is Floyd Davis, pastor of Ridgewood Baptist Church on Bert Kouns- rankinotes
