Jessie Maxey Mauldin Dies in Mississippi

Laurel, MS - June 16 -
Jessie was born on April 18, 1920, in Laurel, the daughter of William Lazarus Maxey and Nellie Walters Maxey, and died in Athens, Ga. June 12, 2005. She attended high school in Jones County and college at Jones County Junior College. She lived for 20 years in the Calhoun Community in Jones County before moving to Pascagoula in 1968, where her husband had opened a new business. Jessie worked for 30 years before retiring from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), where she assisted farmers with their crops. At the time of her retirement in 1980, she was the Jackson County executive director of ASCS.

Jessie was very active in civic work in Jones County and Jackson County, and in her church, the Indian Springs Baptist Church and the Moss Point First Baptist Church. She was a current member of the First Baptist Church of Collins. She taught Sunday school for young people for many years.

Having Virginia roots going back to 1700 and Jones County roots going back to the 1830s, she was very interested in genealogy which became her main hobby. In addition to conducting research on the Mauldin and Maxey family trees, she helped other families do research on their family tree. She relished being the great-granddaughter of Madison Prescott Bush, generally considered the Daddy of Laurel and known affectionately around Laurel as "Uncle Mattie." She became a member and officer of the Duchess de Chaumont chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution after having traced her Revolutionary War ancestor to Prescott Bush and others.

Jessie celebrated the 62nd anniversary of her marriage to her beloved husband, Lemuel Edward Mauldin Jr. (Lee) Aug. 22, 2004. They were married in Yuma, Ariz. and lived in San Diego, Calif., while Lee was serving in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater of World War II. After the war, she and Lee moved back to the Mauldin homestead in the Calhoun Community of Jones County. She was proud of her significant role in helping her husband establish a new business, the Mauldin Wheel Alignment Shop in Pascagoula, and in nurturing her two sons into developing distinguished careers; Ed as an engineer and project manager for NASA, and Joe as a Professor at the University of Georgia.

Jessie is survived by her husband, Lee; her son and daughter-in-law, Lemuel Edward Mauldin III (Ed) and Sally of Reno, Nev.; her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Mason Mauldin (Joe) and Sheryl of Athens, Ga.; her granddaughter, Heather Mauldin Houck and husband Scott of Alexandria,Va.; her granddaughter, Heidi Mauldin of Alexandria, Va.; her grandson, Brent Kinman and wife Jenny of Alpharetta, Ga.; her grandson, Andrew Mauldin of Athens, Ga.; her great-grandson, Austin Houck of Alexandria, Va.; her great-granddaughter, Ashley Houck of Alexandria, Va.; and her great-granddaughter, Anna Kinman of Alpharetta, Ga.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Jessie was a kind and loving sister, daughter and friend. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jarvis Maxey, of Hattiesburg and her sister, Atha Lee Morgan of Bryan, Texas.
Memorial services will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel 11 a.m. June 18 with the Rev. Robert Holifield and wife Flora officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow the memorial service at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel.
