Alaskan Bears

Subject Area(s): Science
Grade Level(s): Third grade
Topics: Key facts of each bear, computer applications, verbal, written, and verbal

Purpose(s) of Lesson:

Use the Internet to search for habitat facts about the grizzly, black, and polar bears of Alaska. Create a Flap Book containing key facts and illustrations of each bear.

Materials Needed:

Computer with Internet access, U.S. map, unlined white paper, markers or crayons

Time Required: One week

Lesson Procedure:

Locate the state of Alaska on a U.S. map or look at one online at Alaska Map .

Explain that students will find facts about these Alaskan bears' habitats: grizzly, black, and polar bears.

Conduct a Brainstorming session to help students access their prior knowledge of these types of bears.

With third graders who are inexperienced in searching the Internet, I have found it better to bookmark these sites. For more experienced Internet users, allow the students to search in Yahooligans.

Students will read about each bear on the Web pages and write at least three important facts about each. Suggested areas to search for: habitat, size and physical appearance, food.

Create a Flap Book containing facts and illustrations of each bear. To make the Flap

Book :

Put two pieces of plain white paper together; slide the top one up approximately one inch.

Fold the two pieces forward so that the top sheet is one inch above the bottom of the top sheet. You now have four flaps.

Staple them together at the fold.

The child will make a cover on the top flap; write a bear name on the bottom of the second flap.

Lift the top flap and draw the bear and write facts which were found about that bear (drawing and facts are on second flap).

Continue with the remaining flaps and bears.

Share booklet facts with classmates.

Explorations and Extensions:

Make acrostic poems with each bear's name.

Create a Venn Diagram with two of the bears.

Use CD-ROM encyclopedias (Encarta, Grolier, etc.) or go to the Web page U.S. Facts to find the state symbols of Alaska. Create a flap book with this information.

Evaluation Tool(s) and Opportunities:

Process :

Students will compare similarity of facts with peers.

Summative :

Students will give an oral presentation of facts.

Products:

Students will be graded on neatness, creativity, and accuracy of facts in the booklet.
