Photographers' advertisements
These are just a few examples of the advertisements that photographers placed in the Trade Directories of their day. These three were taken from Kelly's Post Office Directory for Staffordshire, 1863/64. They are not reproduced to their actual size.
Bennett's entry is of interest as it sets out the price of cartes de visite portraits. Five shillings per half dozen was quite a high price to pay in the mid-19th century, but cheaper than having one's portrait painted
This advertisement illustrates the fact that photographers in 19th century Britain frequently had other strings to their bow and often had work in trades associated with photography such as picture-framing or provision of photographic equipment etc.
The item below reproduces a whole page of Victorian advertising, including that of E.Haseler, photographer. The advert makes it apparent that Haseler specialised in cartes  de visite, which were to achieve almost cult status as the 19th century progressed.
