I am never ceasing to shock the hell out of people when they find out that I listen to Disturbed. (They don't know me very well, do they?) It's hard for me to pin down exactly when I went from "kind of liking" their music, to being as fanatical as I am now. But I'm not complaining. Where The Sickness is raw, Believe is introspective. Sometimes it doesn't even seem like the same band. I have to be in completely different moods to listen to either album. Don't get me wrong, both are awesome and I have listened to them quite exentensively (free-basing is more like it). I simply cannot wait for album number 3! And for the tour that goes with it...I really really really wanted to see them at Ozzfest this summer 2003 (no tengo dinero) and was praying that the fall tour wasn't the rumor it was.
Dan, Fuzz and Mike are amazing musicians. (The drums on Awaken are kick-ass!) But honestly, what drew me into listening to Disturbed was David. His voice is simply beautiful. I know no other way to describe it. Most people would reserve "beautiful" for some crooner like Julio Iglesias, but you need to look past simply the type of music and realize that some of the best damn singers out there are in rock and metal! (Geoff Tate of Queensryche is another one). David's vocal range on songs like Remember (my fave!) and Mistress are mesmerizing. Darkness, so drastically different from all their other songs, is haunting. Yet, even with the difference in sound, songs like Fear and Numb express so much emotion, and--dare I say it--so much wisdom beyond their years. Listen or read any interview with Disturbed, you'll see what I mean.
This is most certainly one band that I would like to see, and I'm certain will, stay around for some time to come. While they probably have their difficult moments (two Virgos, a Leo and a Pisces? You bet!) they have found a formula for making some "beautiful" music. My only question to myself: where the hell was I 3 or 4 years ago when they were still performing at bars around the city? I could have afforded to see them back then, not to mention "witnessed" their rise to stardom! Ah well...someday. :-)
