Remember
Part 1
I walked into the terminal at O’Hare airport and glanced around me, smiling at the familiar sights, including the row of matching blue striped flags emblazoned with 4 red stars across the center. Welcome to Chicago. Damn, it’s good to be home. As I waited in baggage claim for my suitcase to emerge, I realized I had a whole lot of phone calls to start making before my vacation even commences. But first things first.

“Hey Scott, it’s me. I’m on the ground and still alive.”

“Good! Now when are you coming back?”

“I just got here, babe! I’ll be flying back in Friday morning, just like I promised.”

“I miss you already.”

“I miss you too.” I smiled; dang he was so sweet sometimes. “Oh wait, my sister’s finally here with rugrats in tow. I’ve gotta go.”

“All right, honey, call me later.”

I promised I would and said goodbye. My sister greeted me with a hug and I bent over to scoop up my little nephew.

“So how’s the birthday boy?” I asked him, tickling his stomach as he giggled.

“It’s not his birthday until tomorrow!” Reminded his older sister, as she tugged at my shorts. I leaned down to give her a kiss on the head, lest she get any more jealous. Packing up everything, we made our way to Pat's car, then to my hotel downtown.

“I still don’t know why you’re staying downtown.” My sister complained. “You could’ve just stayed with us!”

Not with those two brats running circles around me all day, one birthday party will be enough, thank you.

“Most of my friends live downtown, Pat. Besides, I’m going to the Taste on Thursday. I don’t want to even attempt to figure out how to get there from the suburbs.”

“Isn’t your family more important to visit than your friends?”

And so the nagging begins.

“And didn’t you even try to bring Scott along?” She went on. “Are you embarrassed to introduce your rock-star boyfriend to the rest of your lowly family?” It seems she forgot Scott wasn't the first rock star I ever dated, or maybe he's the only one she liked.

“No, I’m not embarrassed.” I rolled my eyes and looked out the window. “He had a court date this week with his ex-wife and a promo on Thursday. He doesn’t get rich and famous by sitting around.”

“He should spend time with you, if you’re really serious about being together.”

“Pat, I’m not ready to get married or anything yet. Let me have a little fun, okay? Besides, everybody needs a little time away…” I began to sing, “…I heard her say…from each otherrrrr…Even lovers need a holiday, far away from each otherrrrr…”

“OK, time to turn on the radio.” She announced. I just laughed. At least I got her to shut up for a little while.

How much I missed Scott was more evident late that night in my hotel room, alone. Maybe I should have taken my sister’s advice and dragged him along. Even though I called at 1 AM Florida time, he was happy to talk to me. He sang to me softly until I fell asleep. I guess I can’t complain too much about dating a musician. It was a life I was used to.
