Shortly after the show had ended, I spied David, Dan, Fuzz and Mike settling down at one of the many now vacant tables and ordering a few drinks. I quickly excused myself.
“Looks like I have a few other old friends to say hello to.”
“Do you think it’s a good idea?” Asked Cali.
“No, but I know the rest of the guys would be upset if I didn’t.”
She gave me a steely look to which I laughed.
“Don’t worry, I can handle these freaks. But I suppose it’s fair to say that if I disappear, you may just want to go home without me.” I was teasing, really. I truly care for Scott and wouldn’t intentionally hurt him. I know he isn’t the most faithful person himself, but he promised me he would try, and has kept his word. This mini-vacation of mine was a test of sorts.
“You are just so bad.”
“I know.” I smiled. Let her think what she wants.
I sashayed over to the table and was immediately scooped up into a bear hug by Fuzz.
“Hey man, don’t kill her!” Scolded Dan, giving me a kiss on the cheek after Fuzz let me go. I blew a kiss to Mike at the other end of the table and he gave me a wink. I really did miss these guys; we always had such a great camaraderie. The only one who had not greeted me was David. I moved to where he stood to face him. The other three grew silent in anticipation of our reaction to one another.
“Terri.”
“David.”
We stared at each other for a moment till he cracked a smile and opened his arms to me. I couldn’t help but smile back as I stepped into his embrace. He still felt the same, smelled the same…I struggled to keep myself from melting against him as memories flashed briefly in my mind.
“It’s been a long time.” He whispered in my ear. I shivered involuntarily.
“I know.” I pulled away and sat down across from him. We all chatted idly, catching up on various happenings since I’ve been away.
“So, are you still seeing that Creed guy? Stapp?” David interjected. I rolled my eyes. I knew that was coming sooner or later.
“Yes. Why?” I didn’t feel a need to elaborate.
“No reason.” He replied, finishing his drink. “I just saw a picture of you guys in People.”
“Oh, that must have been the Vegas show.”
David shrugged. I narrowed my eyes at him. Dan broke up the tension by ordering a round of Jagermeister shots to celebrate my Chicago visit. The thick, icy liquid burned down my throat and seemed to immediately mix with the Cuervo I’d imbibed earlier. I grabbed the glass of water in front of Fuzz and only managed to freeze my throat further as I coughed.
“Lightweight!” Fuzz teased. I stuck my tongue out at him. The elixir mellowed me out a little more; blurring the edge of the harsh buzz I had from the tequila. Damn, that’s some good stuff.
I excused myself to use the restroom. I took my time in front of the mirror, fussing with my hair and rubbing out the mascara smudges that were beginning to show under my eyes. Perhaps it was time I should leave. The tense feelings were obviously still there, and I didn’t want to get into a fight with him. I didn’t come back home for that.
