Grand mom ( Maria Grazia Priolo ) lived on Fernon st. between 9th and 10th in South Philly.
She had 5 boys and a girl. The 2nd oldest boy Uncle Joe (Joe) was left in Sicily with a family member, because he took ill the day they were leaving for the States, and was not allowed to board the ship and it was to late to make other arrangements.
When Joe recovered from his illness, the family was too send for him.
Now that could be another story. To make a long story short Uncle Joe got in trouble with the law in Sicily, and was not allowed to join the family in the United States.
Grand mom lost her husband and was left with 5 children. Salvie, Albert, Jimmy, Sammy, and Mary.
Uncle Al ( Albert ) never married. He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. I think he was about 33 years old when he died.
He was a wonderful uncle. His nieces and nephews have all good memories of him.

Grandmom was one of the first persons to get a TV. Uncle Al would always let us watch the kiddy shows. He would give us a big cereal bowl filled with ice cream, and grand moms home made cookies. She would let us help her bake. Her great recipe for cookies was a couple of cups of flour, a couple of cups of water, sugar ( depending on how sweet she wanted the cookies ) eggs, baking powder, vanilla, or nutmeg or whatever flavoring was in the house at the time. They always turned out GREAT. I tried that recipe a 100 times without grandmom supervising, and you could not eat them. She just had the magic touch. The same thing with her meatballs. Pork, veal, beef, eggs, (hard bread soaked in water) She would fry them. They were so gooood. Try to make them without her, they just do not taste the same. Her PASTA FAGIOLI was so good I think of her every time I eat it. I could go on and on.
Grandmom has 17 grandchildren. It seems when ever we get together we reminisce and tell stories about Grandmom and our parents.

NANA
|
|
|
|
Giggles, and tickles
and midnight fair,
just like a party
when my Nana was there.
A beauty so fair,
of soul and of face,
a richness of heart,
a flair for such grace.
She lives in my heart
each and every day,
as I think of her love,
in her own special way.
Do I miss her? You bet!
And I always will,
but she lives on within me
for it gives me a thrill,
to think of her spirit,
always so near,
still sharing the laughter
and wiping the tear.
