Background: The Dickinson Hill Fire Tower was built in 1924 in the Town Of Grafton, Rensselaer County, at one of the high points (elevation 1724 ft) on the northern slope of the Rensselaer Plateau. It is the only remaining tower in Rensselaer County and provides a viewshed that reaches the Catskills to the south, Helderbergs to the west, Adirondacks to the northwest, Vermont to the northeast, and the Taconic Range to the east.

Concerted efforts to organize the restoration of the Tower began in the late summer of 1998. Meetings have been held with local residents (May 1999) to address any concerns that they may have. A meeting on November 4, 1999 has initiated a great deal of interest in the project, now we are in the process of initiating the plan to: Build Community Support, Refine Engineering Tasks and Budgets, Negotiate Agency Approvals, Organize a Tower Interpretive and Support Group
