PUK And KDP Agree To Remove One Last Important
Hurdle.
(The Kurdistan Observer) August 13, 2001. Roj Shawis, House Leader of
the of the Kurdish
Parliament in Arbil told the Kurdistan TV, a KDP Seattle TV station,
yesterday that the two
Kurdish parties, KDP and PUK, have reached a major compromise on the
issue of a unified
Kurdistan Parliament.
The source added that the PUK has agreed to KDP's demand of accepting
the outcome of
1992 parliamentary election in which the KDP won a narrow majority
of the MPs.
In return, the KDP greed to have a rotating leadership of a joint/unified
parliament.
According to this agreement, the KDP will lead the Parliament for three
month and the PUK
for a subsequent two months in Suleymaniyah leading to a general election
that will
determine a new parliament.
Mr. Shawis did not elaborate on the date of implementation of this agreement.
