Barzani Meets UN Delegation

(The Kurdistan Observer) August 15, 2001. The KDP leader Massoud
Barzani met with high level UN delegation in Salahddin, reported the KDP
newspaper, Birayeti today. The meeting included Tom Myet, the United
Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Hussain Alfi, Deputy Coordinator for
Kurdistan Affairs, Patricia Stenhouse, Program Official and Sonia Doment,

the UN Information Officer. The talks focused on the status of implementation of the UN
Security Council Resolution 986 in Kurdistan region.

Mr. Barzani made a number of observations and urged the UN delegation to start buying
local grains from needy Kurdish farmers instead of importing them from abroad. Also, Mr.
Barzani urged the UN delegation to help resolve the chronic power shortage in Kurdistan.

The two sides discussed all the humanitarian services, development projects and ways to
improve implementation of the Oil for Food program in Kurdistan.
