Aug 20, 2001

Police detained 9 administrators of the People's Democracy Party (HADEP) and confiscated
documents during a raid on the provincial party headquarters in Bingol.

Police obtained a search warrant from the Bingol State Prosecutor's Office to search the
party offices because they had distributed invitations for September 1 World Peace Day and
raided the building the other evening about 5:00.

Police virtually set up a police station in the building for three hours, taking nine
administrators into custody, scattered the provincial archives and other belongings in the
building, and confiscated all of the invitations in question.

The nine administrators, who remain under interrogation at the Bingol Security Directorate
Political Branch, are as follows: Provincial Secretary Yasar Yurtsever, Central District
Accountant Ali Koc, Provincial Accountant Mehmet Bogakan, Provincial Administrator
Mehmet Bulut, Provincial Youths Commission Administrator Mehmet Cicek, Provincial
Women's Wings Chairwoman Saadet Gundogdu, Central District Administrator Hikmet
Arat, Youth Commission member Orhan Armutcu, and Halil Secer.

4 HADEP members arrested in Bursa

Meanwhile, four HADEP members were arrested in Bursa's Yenisehir district on allegations
that they had "made propaganda for the PKK and collected money." After receiving a tip, a
raid was carried out on the 20 tents in the Yildiz neighborhood of Yenisehir in which
seasonal workers were staying. HADEP Yenisehir District Chairman Halil Pakyun,
Accountant Ali Abis, and party members Nazim Karaman, Fesih Ural, Ramazan Ural,
Fehime Abis, and Sehmus Abis were detained during the raid. The seven HADEP members
were sent to the on-call court after being interrogated at police headquarters, where Ali Abis,
Karaman and Fesih and Ramazan Ural were arrested on charges of "carrying out activities in
the name of the PKK, making propaganda, collecting money, and establishing a PKK court."
