House of Commons delegation meets
Diyarbakir mayor
Turkey's EU membership bid
process and the Ilisu Dam, the construction of which is
to be financed by the British
government, are discussed in the meeting

A group of British House of Commons Industry and Trade
Committee members met with
Diyarbakir Mayor Feridun Celik of the People's Democracy
Party (HADEP), the Anatolia news
agency reported.
The group, comprising Martin O'Neill, Helen Southwortd,
Bob Laxton, Lindsay Hoyle, David
Natzler and Tony Baldry has been on a visit to southeastern
Anatolia. Following the
completion of their tour schedule in Batman they arrived
in Diyarbakir on Tuesday.
Speaking to the press, the group's spokesman O'Neill said
their aim with the visit was to
evaluate Turkey's EU membership bid and to make inquiries
on the Ilisu Dam, the
construction of which is to be financed by the British
government.
Celik told reporters after the meeting that the main topic
of discussion was the construction
of the dam and the complications surrounding the fact
that some 40,000 people will have to
abandon their land when construction begins.
