Kurdish Party Welcomes Meeting with Syrian
Government
(The Kurdistan Observer) August 27, 2001. A column published by the
London-based Al-
Hayat yesterday reports that the United Kurdish People's Party, a
political party in Western
(Syrian) Kurdistan, welcomed the recent meeting between the Kurdish
Democratic Alliance,
comprised of six Kurdish political parties, and two high ranking officials
of the ruling Baath
Party of Syria.
The Kurdish party hopes that the Syrian government will take action
toward recognition of
the Kurdish nation in Syria. The leader of the Kurdish party,
Sallahadin Badir, hopes that
the Syrian government will achieve a peaceful negotiation
toward a democratic solution to the Kurdish question in Syria.
Since Bishar Assad has taken power in Syria, the Kurdish parties have
sent two letters to the
new president urging him to take steps to resolve the Kurdish question
in Syria and have
suggested that democracy cannot be attained in Syria without addressing
the Kurdish
question.
