Turkish Kurd Party
Faces Probe Over Congress-Paper
ANKARA, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Prosecutors are investigating Turkey's only
legal Kurdish
party following accusations that a party congress featured chanting
in favour of condemned
rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, newspapers said on Tuesday.
The People's Democratic Party (HADEP) already faces a possible ban on
charges it has
collaborated with Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebel group.
It denies any connivance. Party officials at Sunday's congress appeared
to be at pains to stop
occasional chanting that broke out in the assembly hall.
The daily Yeni Binyil said prosecutors at the Ankara State Security
Court and at the
Appeals Court had begun two separate probes which could lead a fresh
case against HADEP
for "aiding and abetting the PKK."
Court officials were not immediately available for comment.
Ocalan was captured in Kenya last year and sentenced to death for treason.
The European
Court of Human Rights is currently hearing an appeal against his death
sentence and Turkey
has agreed not to carry out the punishment until it reaches a decision.
