KNC letter to the Danish PM on the Al-Khazraji
affair
30/10/2001 KNC
His Excellency Mr Poul Nyrup Rasmussen
Prime Minsiter,
Prins Joergens Gaard 11

Denmark,

Concern: the case of the Iraqi military Nizar al-Khazraji
Dear Mr Prime Minster,
The Iraqi military General Nizar al-Khazraji was from 1987 to 1991 the
chief of the
General-Staff of the Iraqi Army. He is one of the main Iraqi commanders
responsible for the
genocide committed in Iraqi Kurdistan during the Anfal Campaign of
1988, which resulted
in the mass killing of about 182,000 civilian Kurds, men, women and
children. His name is
mentioned in the documents figuring on page 315 and 355 of the following
book:
Genocide in Iraq: The Anfal Campaign Against The Kurds (A Middle East
Watch Report,
Human Right Watch, New York, Washington, Los Angeles, London, July
1993, ISBN:
1-56432-108-8).
Seeking apparently to hide himself quietly in Europe, Nizar al-Khazraji
lives in Denmark
from 1999. Quite recently, he granted the right of residence in Denmark.
The Danish
authorities obviously ignored his past.
On behalf of the Kurdish people and the Kurdish victims, I urge you,
Mr Prime Minister, to
be kindly willing to take all appropriate measures so that a criminal
investigation be opened
against Nizar al-Khazraji, wit ha view to hand him over to a criminal
Danish court, for
punishment according to the law of your country. Since this affair
has been made public in
the mass media, it would be safe to take him into custody to prevent
him from escaping
justice.
The Kurdistan National Congress would be ready to submit the Danish
justice
any possible evidence as to this case.
We have faith in Danish justice.
Sincerely yours,
Ismet Cheriff Vanly, President of the Kurdistan National Congress
* PS We have just been informed that al-Khazraji was placed under the
police control.
