Turkish Protesters Assail European Parliament

STRASBOURG, France, July 4 (Reuters) - Turkish demonstrators broke through the doors
of the European Parliament's building in northeastern France on Wednesday in a violent
protest over jail conditions in Turkey.

Around 20 protesters hit several security staff during the brief incursion into the Strasbourg
building of the European Parliament, the 15-nation European Union's elected assembly, a
Reuters journalist at the scene said.

Several hundred prisoners in Turkey are on hunger strike and 23 of them have already died
in a crusade against new jails with small cells where they say they are subjected to isolation
and mistreatment.

A delegation of European Parliament members visited Ankara last month and urged
authorities in Turkey, which wants to joint the European Union, to find a way to end the
hunger strikes and reduce the number of political prisoners.
