Greek coastguards arrest 36 Kurdish immigrants
ATHENS, Aug 6 (AFP) Greek authorities have arrested 36 Kurds suspected
of trying to
enter the country illegally, after coastguards intercepted their
ship on Monday, the merchant
navy ministry announced.
Three Turkish men were arrested after they were caught at the
helm of the ship, the Marco
Polo, which was sailing without papers when it was picked up
by authorities from Karpathos in
the southeast Aegean, carrying 19 immigrants.
Police picked up a further 17 people on the Karpathos coast who
are believed to have been
dropped off by the ship.
The incident marks the 47th seizure of a ship from Turkey this
year. More than 2,000 suspected
illegal immigrants and 55 suspected human traffickers have been
detained.
