|
In 1972, Louis signed with Stax Recordings, Inc. in Memphis, releasing his album, REFLECTIONS OF THE WAY IT REALLY IS, late in 1973 on the Enterprise label. It had taken a year and 6 weeks to complete. He also had made 4 singles. The first a quickly done holiday title IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME / SANTA CLAUSE IS ON HIS WAY. Two from his album MERRY-GO-ROUND / MISTY CRYSTAL and MY DREAM / I LIKE ROCK & ROLL. The fourth was WITH A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE / GOTTA GET AWAY that has never been released.

The cover was drawn by Ellis Chappell. Louis remembers that it was his manager's idea to have him sit in clown make up for 5 hours while it was drawn. He felt this was a waste of his time and could have been done just as well from photographs.

Louis believes the clown make up was Al Bell's idea, so no one would know his race until the album was released and he began to preform in public. Mr. Bell also hired a motion picture group to come to Memphis from New York and make a film with Louis to promote the record sales in movie theaters accross the country. If anyone knows where we can get a copy of this film please contact us by E-mail. We have been told it was shown on PBS several years ago, but we have been unable to track it down.

Doing most of the music and vocals on recording can have drawbacks when you are preforming live. To duplicate the sound on stage Louis had to have a killer band.
Tony Thomas was the his band leader. Tony, a gifted classical organist played keyboard, Mike Gardner on durms, Steve Spears on piano, Rick Allen on guitar & steet guitar and Louis. The back up singers were Pat Carter, Louise Meredith and Theresa Phillips. The beginning of each show would feature each of the band members and introduce them. Then each back up singer would sing a number as she was introduced. Then he would come out. He said he wanted everyone in his band to be appreciated for their individual talent, as well as their ability to perform with him.
He and the 3 back up singers would often rehearse in Backy Phillips living room on her piano. She had a minor bird named Inky, who loved music. She would sit Inky on the piano to listen. After a few rehearsal sessions, he started to sing along with them in perfect harmony from time to time. This would break everyone up. Becky said he would sometimes sing for her long after the practice session was over.

In this ad you can see unique talent Louis has with music. He is given credit for all the music, vocals, writing and arrangements. the last line says, "If anyone thinks they can beat Louis Paul, come on!" He is one of the few people that can write, arrange, record and mix a professional quality recording without anyone's help.
