When Stax went down it took all the artist with them. They lost everything. The IRS took everything, but the clothes Louis was wearing. He did even have a guitar to try to start over again. A friend took him to a music store, bought him a new guitar and told him to pay her back when he could.
Louis and Jerry Phillips tried to start their own label, Cookin' Memphis Records. They recorded LOVE SOMEONE AND MAKE 'EM HAPPY / THERE AIN'T BEEN ON ROCKIN' SINCE ROCK & ROLL LEFT TOWN.

Leon Russell and Denny Cordell owners of Shelter Records heard LOVE SOMEONE AND MAKE 'EM HAPPY and signed Louis. The didn't like the flip side, Louis wrote an instrumental CRYSTAL BLUE for the B side.
This was the last record Louis has released to date. He gave up on recording after Columbia suited Shelter when they signed a female artist and released a single on her, before her contract ran out with Columbia. This put Shelter out of business.
He said 2 record companies going under just before his record got a chance was enough for him. Louis and Jerry also parted company over a private matter shortly after that.
Louis is still friends with the Phillips family, but they don't work together anymore.

Interesting fact. Although Jerry Phillips had nothing to do with writting this song, when he registered the copyright on it he listed himself a co-writer. Louis had never noticed this until I pointed it out to him not long after we met in 1998 when I helped him move.
