STEPHANE GAMACHE - A FACE OF THE FUTURE

Young, tall, confident, smooth. Stéphane Gamache dominates the local running scene whenever he races in Ottawa. These accomplishments though are not sufficient by themselves. He is getting himself ready for the future. This is why you will see him run against Canada and some of the world's best as he races in the Canada Running Series. He is not afraid to duke it out against the Kenyans when they race in Canada. He believes it is only a matter of time before he himself is at the top.

At 25, Stéphane Gamache has only been concentrating on road racing for a few years now. He used to compete in duathlons where he cycled and ran. The competition in Northern Ontario was not very fierce though and the costs of travelling around to races to find competition were quite high. He then decided to make the switch to road running and he has been performing well since. His running background goes far. As he describes running to school and back with his father, a school director, you are easily reminded of the Kenyans.

Contrary to many runners racing at his level, Gamache has not come from a track background and rarely races on the track. However, he trains with a track team, the Ottawa Lions. Stéphane is a true road runner. His love of the roads is supported by adidas; wherever Stéphane races, you can follow the bright colours of his sponsor. His present focus is on the Canada Running Series where he usually comes in the top 10. Last year, he placed 4th in the Circuit behind Steve Boyd, Bruce Deacon and Fraser Bertram.

Like every young talented athlete, Gamache has goals and dreams. With Khalid Khannouchi as inspiration, one can image the kind of dreams Stéphane might have. For this year, he plans on focusing his training so as to qualify for a National Team. In the Fall, he will be concentrating on making the Cross-Country Team, while in the new year, Stéphane plans on running his second marathon in the hopes of qualifying for the 2001 Francophone Games in Ottawa.

In order to get ready for races, Gamache puts in 140 km per week in his build-up phase. This drops to 100 km in the racing season. He trains with the Ottawa Lions three times a week and completes a long run of 30-35 km in the middle of the week. In planning for a marathon, he will be running more miles, but less speed workouts. With this level of training, he has been able to achieve times of 15:11 for 5km, 30:10 for 10 km and a 1:09:42 half-marathon, a time he just did at the National Capital Half-Marathon. His only marathon is a 2:39 in the 1997 Ottawa marathon. One of his most memorable races was the Maski-Courons 20 K race last year where he struggled in 35 C humidex and managed to finish 3rd behind Janik Lambert and place in the money.

When Gamache is not on the roads training, he is assisting other athletes perform at their best as he is a Massage Therapist. His occupation keeps him in touch with top level athletes in Ottawa and the flexible schedule gives him time to train and go for his dreams. Listening and watching Stéphane, you can feel the youthful energy and you cannot help but think that in the future, this is a face that can make a mark on Canadian road running.

 SPORTING LIFE 10K

This race held on May 7 in Toronto was the 5th race in the Canada Running Series. The competition was fierce with Kenyans placing at the front of the field. The pace though did not disadvantage Bruce Deacon who used it to complete the Olympic qualifying standards. Though Deacon had gone under the Olympic standard of 2:14 by running a 2:13:55 in Japan late last year, Athletics Canada still required him to demonstrate fitness. He needed to go under 29:35 for a 10K and he went under in Toronto. This makes it official, Bruce Deacon will represent Canada in Sydney.
