JULY 20, 2000 RUNNING REPORT

GRAEME FELL - TIME TO ENJOY

These days, you will often see Graeme Fell enjoying himself as he competes in road races. With some time off during the summer from his teaching, Fell even takes the opportunity to travel to some of the big name races in Canada and the US. Recently he competed in the Peachtree Road Race 10K in Atlanta on July 4, and followed up with the Boilermaker 15K in Utica, NY. Though not entirely satisfied with his results, he still enjoyed the high spirits at those events.

Participating in road racing was not always a possibility for Graeme. Throughout his running career, his forte was the steeplechase, and at the level he was competing, it did not allow him to enjoy the roads.

Fell started running as a young lad in Great Britain, where his initial focus was on the great tradition of cross-country running. He also dabbled in road running now and then. As he got older, he joined a club and started incorporating some track races. Because of his high stature, Fell naturally gravitated towards the steeplechase. Fell admits that his lack of raw speed made him not as competitive in other shorter events. When he was nineteen, he made a breakthrough and he then decided to dedicate his running career to the steeplechase. This decision with his dedication to his sport and the highest level of training brought him to the pinnacle of his sport.

Graeme Fell attended college in England, then university in San Diego, CA. In 1984 he moved to Canada on the West Coast. Since he started representing Canada, he has participated in 2 Olympic Games (88 and 92), 5 World Track and Field Championships (85, 87, 91, 93, 95), 3 Commonwealth Games (86, 90, 94) and a myriad of other events.

Graeme is filled with fond memories of his years competing as a steeplechaser. His appearance at the 1986 Commonwealth Games was not only marked by a victory, but by a solid preparation phase leading to the Games. These were on the back of his great performance in Koblenz, Germany in 1985 where he set the Canadian Steeplechase record of 8:12. Fell even has fond memories of his training in a group where he cruised through a hard workout of 5x1000m in 2:32 on 3 minutes. When you talk to Graeme, you can sense the experience he has of running at an international level.

After being injured for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, he found himself performing well, but not really being able to prepare himself as well as he would have liked. His regiment as a steeplechaser saw him follow a rigid seasonal training program that included speed workouts from 200m to 1000m, weight training and stretching to prevent injury. Most of his training has been done under the watchful eyes of Doug Clement. These sessions have brought him times of 3:39:3 for 1500m, 7:42 for 3000m, 13:30 for 5,000m and 28:38 for a road 10K. He has even completed a marathon in 2:16 that he found quite easy. He has no plans of going that distance again though.

Today, Fell is enjoying the roads and the 200m repeats have been replaced by longer intervals up to a mile. Fell now follows an easier and more flexible training regiment. He needs this as his job as a teacher and school coach leaves him less time to focus on his own training. Nonetheless, he is still able to get himself in racing shape quickly so that he can compete in road races. He aims to get back under 30 minutes for the 10 K and place high in the rankings. Though he often places at the top of the Masters category and is currently ranked #1 in Canada as a Masters in the 10K, Graeme really races in the open category. He is looking forward to running hard and enjoying the roads in the months to come.
