July 2001 Report

JULY 20, 2001 RUNNING REPORT

SANDY JACOBSON – CONQUERING THE WORLD

Sandy Jacobson will be representing Canada at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Edmonton in August.  Her path to Edmonton might be short in distance, but long in duration.  Sandy is from Edmonton.  She works at the University of Alberta in the Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Science as an Administrative Coordinator for the Functional Foods Alberta Centre of Excellence.  When she runs the marathon on August 12, she will not have far to go to participate.  She will also be quite familiar with the course as she has run almost all sections of the race at one time or another.  She even won the Edmonton Marathon six years ago, which got her hooked into long distance running.

Jacobson, now 35, was previously a triathlete, competing in Ironman distance events.  Her endurance background was thus well developed, having competed in events that include a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km run.  These event lasts from 8 to 16 hours depending on your fitness.  Though Jacobson has now decided to concentrate on the marathon, cross-training still forms part of her training regiment.  On an average week, she will be out there running 140 km, cycling for four hours and swimming 4 km.  Her preparation for the Worlds will be slightly different as she will be training with the Discovery USA Fila Team in St. Moritz in the Alps under the watchful eyes of legendary coach Dr. Gabriela Rosa, trainer of many Kenyans.  This training which started at the end of June and will last for about a month, will include some arduous runs at altitude once or twice a day, with no rest days.  The concept is the known method of “Train Hard, Win Easy”.

This is not the first time that Jacobson has participated in a training camp.  In order to represent Canada in Edmonton, Sandy had to be ranked in the top five in Canada for the marathon distance.  To achieve this, she had to improve on her Personal Best which was set in 1998 as she placed in fifth position at the Grandma’s Marathon in a time of 2:39:17.  Though this time was out of the qualifying period, Jacobson clocked a 2:39:42 in winning the Silicon Valley Marathon last Fall.  This time initially ranked her in the top 5, but unfortunately, a rival, Tania Jones, clocked a 2:39:10 at the London Marathon this Spring.  If Jacobson really wanted to represent Canada in her home town, she was going to have to set a PB.

To get ready for another attempt at setting a top ranking marathon time, Jacobson attended an exclusive three-month camp in California.  This was the first time she encountered Dr. Rosa and his training methods.  With peak training experience under her belt, she attempted the Boston Marathon in April, unfortunately, she had not recovered from an illness and pulled off the course after 20 miles.  Now with only a training plan from Dr. Rosa, she had only one more opportunity to qualify at the Canadian Championships in Ottawa in May.

With the support of her husband, John Jacobson from Athletics Alberta, her 6-year-old son, Jesse, and an understanding employer, Sandy set her mind for a good time in Ottawa.  Her plan was to run a consistent pace and not be drawn into someone else’s race.  She executed this remarkably as she ran her race, leading most of the way, and was not faze when Danuta Bartoszek passed her in the final two kilometers of the race.  Jacobson kept her pace and finished in a time of 2:38:28, guarantying her a place on the Canadian Team.

With her mind at easy, her training on track, Jacobson is poised to conquer at the Worlds.  She hopes to finish in the top 20 in under 2:35, which would be another PB for her.

CALGARY STAMPEDE ROAD RACES

This event held as part of the Calgary Stampede includes a marathon and a 10K race.  In the marathon, Colleen Caley and Dennis Colburn were winners.  In the 10K race, there were a couple of athletes who will be representing Canada at the Francophone Games as Lisa Harvey and Janice McCaffrey placed 1s and 2nd.  Harvey will be running the 10,000m at the Games, while McCaffrey will be running the marathon.  Lanny Mann was the male winner.
