NOVEMBER 20, 2001 RUNNING REPORT ISABELLE LEDROIT WINS ROAD RUNNER OF THE YEAR
AWARD Isabelle Ledroit is once again the winner of the Road Runner of the Year Award for 2001. Road Running Canada (formally The Running Scene), recognizes the best road runner of the year based on ranking and head to head competition. Isabelle Ledroit narrowly beat out Danuta Bartoszek who is named runner-up of the year. Ledroit’s performances include a 2:38:59 marathon in Italy, a 1:13:33 half-marathon in Las Vegas and a 33:32 10K in Toronto. In head to head competition, Ledroit beat out Bartoszek twice, while Bartoszek beat out Ledroit once. Ledroit will be receiving a $200 award, while Bartoszek will be getting $100 for her runner-up position. Bruce Deacon became a three time winner of the California International Marathon as he won the popular late marathon on December 2. He finished the race in California in a time of 2:22:12 which earned him $10,000. This fast course held is in Sacramento, but this year, the conditions were not great for a quick marathon. In the women’s race, Tania Jones finished 4th in a time of 2:43:23, just a few weeks after her second place finish in Niagara. This earned her $1,000. Veronique Vandersmissen ended up in 6th place in 2:44:01 which was a follow-up on her win in Quebec City in August. Another Canadian, Lisa Harvey was 10th in 2:56:44 Joan McGrath won the Seattle Marathon for the second year in a row. She placed 1st on Sunday November 26 in a time of 2:49:25, a PB. In the men’s race, David Ruggles placed second in a time of 2:36:23 Cindy O’Krane placed 3rd in the Caribbean 10K race held on December 2. She completed the race in 39:36.
