Evelyn Whiddon Davis was a contemporary of Jeannette Rankin Byers. Only 13 months separated their ages. Jeannette died in May 2005 just two months prior to her 89th birthday. Evelyn was one of ten children of Addie Mae Rankin Whiddon and Alton Whiddon. Most of the Rankin kids of Frank and Candace Rankin remember the fond visits with the Whiddons in Conroe and at Pelican. The older Rankin siblings remember the visits in East Texas prior to their coming to Louisiana.Actually, it was difficult to get to know all the cousins. Some visited on a regular basis and some did not. Our family did not visit that much, if at all. I do remember going to Houston with Jeannette, Elvin, Pop, and Paul and visiting Aunt Jimmie and Uncle Cecil about 1948 or 1949. On the way we stopped in Conroe and visited the Whiddons. Most visits since that time have been at several funerals of the Whiddons and Rankins starting with Aunt Addie Mae in February, 1968 and Pop a couple of months later. The Whiddons were always represented at our Rankin Funerals.
There still remains a large group of descendants - Rankin and Whiddon - which includes grandchildren and great grandchildren that some of us will never get to know.
In an age of the internet and cheap long distance calls, that's a shame. We are grateful of the opportunities we had to meet some of the cousins. When I look at the Johniken side of the family the success at knowing our relatives is little.
I am grateful to Frank for informing us of his mother's sickness and subsequent death. Also, Frank Whiddon in Conroe, for a copy of the obituary and a funeral home program. This memorabilia will not be lost but passed on to the younger generation.
Lets stay in touch when we can.
