DULUTH PUBLIC LIBRARY
While in Duluth today I took a detour through the Duluth Public Library(DPL). I was truly impressed with how they had arranged their romance collection. They not only have all of their collection catalogued, but they also have it displayed by "Category" (eg, Regency, Contemporary, Harlequin/Silhouette, etc.). I also had a chance to talk with Lucy, a librarian from the Literature department. I told her that I was impressed with her collection & let her know that we have a website she might be interested in visiting. Anyway, as a result of the visit, the DPL is considering offering MFFLRR as a link from the DPL Website! I'll let you know what happens. We have a link to the DPL Website, so go check it out. And if you live in Duluth, be proud of DPL's great romance collection! - Teresa 3-31-00

THE BOOK BIN (NW Metro), 125-85th Av NW, Coon Rapids, (Across from Northtown), ph. 612-784-5958. Hrs: M-F: 10-8, Sa: 10-6, Su: 12-5.
Used Paperbacks: 1/2 off cover, $1 minimum.
Trade Scheme: You receive 25% of the cover price of the book you bring in to put towards any other book. (Keep in mind the $1 minimum.)
Example: Nice & straightforward!
Other: They check the shelves if you call to request a specific title. Their request system consists of the manager remembering that you want a title that may come in.
Review: Who can go wrong with an understandable Trade Scheme like this! They have a medium sized romance collection, good hours and the folks are nice.

PAPERBACK EXCHANGE (SW Mpls) 2227 W 50th St, Mpls (corner of 50th & Penn Av S), ph. 612-929-8801. Owners: Keith & Marion. Hrs: M-Th: 10-8, F & Sa: 10-5:30, Su: 12-4.
Used paperbacks: 60% of cover price.
Trade Scheme: If you bring in paperbacks you receive 70% of the cover price for the item you bring in as credit. With that credit (as long as you have enough credit to cover the original cover of the book you are buying) you can buy a used book for 30% of the cover price.
Example: If you bring in 2 paperbacks that were originally marked as $5 you will receive $7 in trade credit. With this trade credit you can buy a book (that was originally priced at NO MORE THAN $7) at 30% of the original cover. If you buy a book that was originally marked $5, you would pay $1.50 & your store trade credit would be reduced to $2.
Other: They have ALL their romances in a computerized inventory. If you call to ask for a specific title, they can tell you right away if they have it. They also have a Request system that is computerized, so if they get a book in that you have requested, they know right away.
Review: This is the place to go if you are looking for a specific title as they have a great inventory & Request system. Their Trade Scheme is a little confusing though. On the up, their hours are great & it's easy to find & get to in the cities. For browsing, the prices are a little higher than other 1/2 price bookstores, but they have a WHOLE ROOM dedicated to just Harlequins/Silhouettes!

PAPERBACKS PLUS (NE Metro), 2381 N Margaret St, North St Paul (just south of the giant snowman on Hwy 36) ph. 651-770-0384. Owner: Katherine. Hrs: M-F: 11-5:30, Sa: 10-3, Su: Closed.
Used Paperbacks: 1/2 off cover price, with a minumum of $.50.
Trade Scheme: 25% of the cover price of the book you bring in can be used to pay up 1/2 in credit.
Example: If you bring in a paperback worth $5, you would receive up to $1.25 off the next book you bought. You wish to buy a $4 book. 1/2 of the original cover = $2. You can use up to $1 of the credit, as you can use trade credit to pay for NO MORE THAN half the CURRENT sale price.
Other: They check the shelves if you call & ask about a specific title. They do have a Request system, but the system is managed by the owner.
Review: The Trade Scheme is relatively easy to understand, but the hours are kind of bizarre. The owner is very friendly & she does a good job of managing the Request system, but her inventory is on the 'smallish' side.
