The New York Packet was founded in 1979 by folk song collector, singer and author Dan Milner. It became South Street Seaport Museum's official maritime music group in 1999. The New York Packet draws upon 12 highly respected singers and musicianseach with his or her own area of musical, historical or cultural area of expertise: working shanties, ballads, the Hudson Valley, immigration, Afro-American song, the Port of New York, inland waterways, Irish traditional song and the repertoire of New York's concert saloons and early vaudeville.
South Street Seaport Museum is a vibrant center for maritime and urban history in the heart of New York City. Among the museum's many treasures are an unparalleled collection of historic ship (including the 347-foot, steel-hulled, four-masted bark, Peking; the schooners, Lettie G. Howard and Pioneer; and the Ambrose Lightship), the 1811 Federal Period buildings of Schermerhorn Row, numerous exhibit galleries, and over 1,000,000 books and artifacts relating to New York and maritime history. Fall-Winter-Spring 2000/2001 Concert Schedule: The New York Packet sings the first Sunday of each month at South Street Seaport Museum's Melville/Whitman Galleries on Water Street (between Fulton & Beekman Streets) starting at 3 PM. On January 6 - Marc Bernier one of the Mystic Seaport's Shanteymen and interpreters will perform with mandolin, guitar and fife. Marc has worked under sail both on crew and as a chef from Chesapeake Bay to the coast of Maine, and on the Hudson River as an educator for the Clearwater ecology program. Upcoming guests will include Deirdre & Sean Murtha, Don Sineti, The Johnson Girls and Dan Milner & Bob Conroy. Previous guests have included Liverpool's Hughie Jones, Mainbrace from Wales, All-Ireland Singing Champion Jim MacFarland, Ken Hall & Peta Webb and David Jones & Heather Wood from England, and Howie Leifer's Homesick Sailor Puppet Theatre from New York's waterfront. Concert series co-sponsored by the Folk Music Society of New York.
Other Performances: On October 20th, 2001, Jan Christensen, Bob Conroy and Dan Milner sang at a benefit concert for the New York Firemen's Widows & Children's Fund and the Staten Island Firefighters' Memorial organized by Bob Conroy; 73 of the firefighters who died in New York City on September 11th lived on Staten Island. Over $4,000 was raised. Members of The New York Packet regularly sing at folk music and maritime festivals around the United States and Europe. In 2001, they have appeared in Britain, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and in the USA, in California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusets, Pennsylvania and Texas.
