STROKE SURVIVOR
 MAX RIVERA
I had a stroke at the age of 57 on July 19, 1993 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  The stroke was in the right hemisphere and caused left side paralysis.  Through many hours of physical and occupational therapy, I am able to walk using an AFO (brace) short distances with a cane.  I do use a wheelchair for longer distances.   My left arm and hand have not benefited much from therapy.

Luckily, I had a great doctor who told me that I was going back to work.  I worked as a computer specialist for the Federal Government.  I was able to work seven more years before I retired in January, 2001.  This was accomplished by the constant encouragement of doctors, therapists, my wife, family, friends and the Las Cruces Stroke Support Group.

I now live in Rio Rancho, New Mexico and am a member of the Albuquerque Stroke Club.

My main interest is research on stroke and related matters on the internet.
