I started my life off in East Chinnock, a quiet little village not far from Yovil. Summerset, England. This was just after the Second World War and times were hard for all. East chinnock was a small farming community, with milk producing cows and fields of grain. Although it was quiet there, I loved the place, still do. With its tree covered sandy hollowed lanes that meandered though the gently rising hills. Primrose and daisy fill meadows, apple orchards and wield cress growing in the clear running water streams. ( Well that’s all we had, hehe ).
My Dad was in the Army then, so most of my growing days moved around a lot, only staying in one place no more then three years. Some of the places we went to, mostly when I was to young to remember were:
Dortmund in Germany, Strencel in Yorkshire. The ones I can are: Cyprus, Kent and Malaysia, with a bit of home coming in between.
Apart from the Army Boarding School, which was in the highlands of Malaysia, I loved that Country. We were close the beach and in the Army Camp there were shops and a swimming poll. The Camp was a short drive from Malacca, so all in all it was just right for most things. I was about 14 / 16 year old there and just coming up to the end of my schooling years. That was around 1964.
After that I spent some time back in East Chinnock, and started an apprenticeship in Westland Aircraft in Yovil. But by that time the country life was a bit slow for me so I moved to Kent for the second time. My dad by this time had left the Army and found a job in Hythe Kent, as they like that aria.
British Railways is where I continued and finished my apprenticeship as an Electrician. Living here, you could say I developed into what I am today. Having an interest in music, electronics, girls and disco, it was only a matter of time until I put together my own mobile Disco setup. I was lucky to find a Night Club, well a Pub with a back room were local groups played. They needed someone to fill in between band sets. So “Glenn’s Sound Around” was born. The 70’s was a good time for music, disco and me. Starting over, making new friends again was the hardest thing. But running a disco and going to other discos in Folkestone help a lot. I hope Glenn Sound Around, made an impression in people’s lives. A fire at the Neptune pub ended that joyous time.
After two and a half years of working, running a disco, I gave the mobile disco away. I did a bit of DJ’ing for other Discos in Folkestone for a time. Then it was the time for someone else to do the entertaining and for me to enjoy disco music and dancing.
It was at such a disco night I met me wife to be, who by the way had come all the way from Australia on holiday. Of all the girls it had to be one from the other side of the world. It was love at first site, so what more can I say. We married and found a small terrace house in Folkstone and started to build a life together.
A holiday trip to Australia was another turning point in my life. I fell in love with Perth Western Australia and the life stile in the sun, so that’s where we ended up next.
That fist year was the hardest of all. Being away from all I knew. Both my patience passing away and not being there for them. Having to go back to TAFE so I could work and finding a job. We got though it with help from my wife’s family and friends that lived around Perth.
14 years pasted in Perth raising two great kids and a house and having a great time. Only being spoiled by migraines, that I had since 15 years of age and back pain from working on switchgear at and below knee level.
