The Wall

The Wall

Salt Spring Island, B.C.

The Wall out front  The Wall out back

The Wall, founded in 1995, is a volunteer-run, non-profit facility operated by the Community Centre on the Island.  It gives people the chance to experience the thrill of climbing a vertical or even overhanging wall without any risk whatsoever: all of the ropes are anchored from above so that a fall means merely stretching the rope a bit and no harm done to the climber!

The Wall is open to both young & old with children under the age of 18 required to have a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian who must be present to read and sign the document.  Children between the ages of 6-12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The main overhang of the Wall can be quite intimidating at first but, with a little practice, it becomes no problem at all!

The Wall is constructed with ¾" plywood and uses plastic holds bolted on with t-nuts.  The volunteers set new routes up the Wall on a regular basis and generally try to keep a good variety from beginner routes to intermediate.  Because the focus of the Wall is on building confidence in young people, we tend not to emphasize the difficulty of the climbs but rather the enjoyment that the children derive from the experience of scaling a 25' wall with just their hands and feet.

The Wall also offers rentals to groups and provides belayers (people to hold the end of the rope) and a supervisor for the facility. Birthday parties are especially popular for rentals.

where's the rope?

The Wall received a fresh coat of paint in 1998 as well as the addition of a vestibule for changing & chatting.  The Wall is 16' X 16' and 25' high which provides more than enough climbing area to keep kids busy for an evening.  No climbing experience is necessary, so drop by for a visit and check out The Wall!
