Local Student’s receive President George W. Bush’s
Student Service Award

Millions of students volunteer every day to improve communities and help make America stronger. Launched in 1998, the President’s Student Service Award is awarded to students in recognition of their outstanding community service. Just a few months ago President George W. Bush visited Connecticut to promote volunteerism. As a result of their efforts six local youth will receive this prestigious award sponsored through the General Federation of Women’s Clubs-Milford Young Women's Club and the President of the United States of America. A reception is scheduled for Friday, May 31st at 7:15 p.m. at the Woodmont Volunteer Library located at 16 Dixon Street, Milford in honor of these students’s.

Three local youth will receive the President’s Student Service Gold Awards. They are Katie Oakes, a junior at Foran High School in Milford; Telka Vecchitto and eighth grade student at Harborside Middle School in Milford and Robyn Brower an Orange resident who is a junior at Hamden Hall. This award is bestowed upon youth in grades kindergarten through college, who perform at least 100 hours of service within a 12-month period. The silver award is presented to youth in grades kindergarten through eighth grade, who have performed at least 50 hours of community service within a 12 month period. The students who will be receiving the silver award are Kinal Patel, a sixth grade student at East Shore Middle School in Milford, Teddy Vecchitto, a fourth grade student at Mathewson School in Milford and Steven Washington, a resident of Milford who is in eighth grade.

Katie Oakes of Milford volunteered one hundred hours of community service time in the last year. Many of these hours included her role as President of the GFWC-Milford Girl’s Club and organizing the Annual Pie in the Sky bake-a-thon for charity, assisting in a woman’s build for Habitat for Humanity and much more.

Telka Vecchitto of Milford has volunteered 115 hours in the community. Some of her activities included making valentines and cookies for the 120 residents of Mediplex of Milford, assisting at the Woodmont Volunteer Summer reading program, cooking food for dinners at the Beth-El Shelter, she sponsored an Adopt-A-Spot in front of the Woodmont Volunteer Library and much more.

Robyn Brower, an Orange resident performed 154 hours of community service hours by volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity build, assisting at the weekly summer reading program at the Woodmont Volunteer Library, assisting with the recycling at the Annual Milford Oyster Festival to name a few.

Kinal Patel of Milford is a member of the GFWC-Milford Girl’s Club that participates monthly in community service activities. Her volunteer time has been spent on making Valentines and baking cookies for senior citizens in nursing homes, participating in reading to youth, and many other service activities through her church and scouts.

Teddy Vecchitto, a resident of Milford, volunteered 54 hours of community service hours in the last year. He participated in a cubscout food drive, visited residents for the holidays in a local nursing home and sang holiday carols. He also participates in GFWC- Milford Young Women’s Clubs sponsored activities. He is well known for his portrayal of Santa Claus each Christmas as he visits each of the 120 residents of Mediplex of Milford with gifts and cookies.

Steven Washington is an eighth grade student who is a resident of Milford and volunteered 53 hours for community service projects in the last year at his church, school and as a volunteer in the community. He also has volunteered for the GFWC-Milford Young Women's Club as a pianist for their holiday sing-a-long for the residents of Mediplex of Milford.

"What better way to encourage and recognize volunteers than to reward youth for their efforts," said Telka diFate, President of the GFWC-Milford Young Women’s Club. This club voted unanimously to sponsor youth that showed dedication to community service not only through their organizations projects but also through scouts, churches, the Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and more.
