Annually, a creative writing contest is open to all children who are
Milford residents, presently in grades 1-12. Local winners will be entered
in the state competition. State finalists will then be entered in the
national contest at the GFWC headquarters in Washington, D.C.
During the
last four years, 28 of the 32 GFWC/CT state awards were given to Milford
children. Two Milford children have won in the national contest.
Annual Creative Writing Contest 2006
A creative writing contest is open to all children who are Milford residents grades 1-12.
Students do not have to be attending a Milford Public School to participate. The contest is
free and entries must be received no later than Friday, March 17, 2006.
There are two categories of writings that can be entered. Short stories and poetry. Students
may enter as many times as they wish in both categories. Short stories are not to exceed 2,000
words. Poems can be any style with a minimum of eight lines and maximum of 30 lines. Entries
will be judged in four age categories: grades 1-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-9 and grades 10-12.
Authors must be amateur status and have written their entry during the last year. All entries
must be typed, double-spaced with minimum 1-inch margins. The entry must be on one side and on
8 1/2" by 11" paper. The top right hand corner of each page must contain the following
information (this may be hand written): name, address, phone number, GFWC-Milford Young Women’s
Club, school name & teacher, grade and manuscript title. Manuscripts cannot be returned.
Authors should keep a copy.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs sponsors this contest. This is the world’s oldest,
international, volunteer, women’s organization. The GFWC-Milford Young Women’s Club will sponsor
local entries and they will enter them into the state competition. After being judged on the
state level finalists will then be entered into the national contest at the headquarters in
Washington D.C. In the last four years 36 of the 48 GFWC/CT state awards were given to Milford
children. Each year the winners are recognized at an awards ceremony at the Woodmont Volunteer
Library. In the last few years three Milford students also won the national contest.
The purpose of this program is to encourage creative writing skills in youth grades 1-12 and to
recognize outstanding achievements in writing to enhance self-esteem.

Entries can be faxed to 783-0207 or emailed to MYWC@optonline.net. They must be received by
March 22, 2007. For more information call 877-7921. Teachers may leave entries at their school
office for pick up on or before March 22, 2007 but you must arrange for pick up by calling
877-7921 prior to the deadline.
