On July 20th 1895 an unidentified Rushen aged 29 years, arrived at Ellis Island in America. He had sailed on the ship "New York" from Southampton. Who was he? Where did he come from? Where did he go?
On the 24th March 1808 William Rushin, aged 45, departed from St. Joseph in Trinidad after six and a half years service in the West Indies with the 37th Regiment of Foot. Quoted on his discharge papers as being, "nearly worn out."
In the 1895 census for Santa Cruz Eduardo Rushen aged 30 years is given as a shepherd. He was born in Wiltshire in 1865 as Edward J Rushen. What is his story, do you know?
John Rushen aged twenty two years and six months, six feet tall, sallow complexion, grey eyes and brown hair, a labourer from Ramsbury, Wiltshire, joined
the Royal Marines at Reading on the 21st September 1831. In 1837 he was court martialled for being absent without leave and sentenced to fourteen days solitary confinement. After serving on HMS Asia, Thunderer, Edinburgh, Gorgon and Excellent, he was discharged on the 13th June 1848.
