General Notes: John had an interest in politics and became a close friend of Richard Seddon, writing his maiden speech when Seddon entered Parliament.

He emigrated to Australia during the gold-rush in that country and met Matilda, I believe at Gympie, Queensland. Matilda Mellin b. 10 Mar 1845 in Singleton, NSW, Australia. They both later came to Hokitika when gold was discovered there.

Moved from Westland to Oroua Downs prior to April 1902. This was established by the address of next of kin when Issac sailed for the Boer War.

   John & Matilda live next door to PM Seddon in Kumara, West Coast, and where very good friends with them.
   John owned the hotel on one corner and the Seddon's had the General Store on the opposite corner from the hotel.
    Around about 1883, John, Matilda and family shifted to Palmerston North from Kumara, West Coast.
    In about 1908 John and Matilda parted, Matilda stayed in Palnerston North and John went to Feilding and then finely to Napier, where he died

     John Kennedy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was the son of David Kennedy, the then Mayor (or Provost) of Glasgow. He was a solicitor, having graduated from Glasgow University. He emigrated to Australia during the gold-rush in that country and later came to Hokitika when gold was discovered there. He had an interest in politics and became a close friend of Richard Seddon, writing his maiden speech when Seddon entered Parliament. John Kennedy later moved to the Palmerston North district with his family of nine and spent the rest of his life in business around Marton, Feilding and Palmerston North.

                                                                     MR F. C. KENNEDY
     Mr Frederick Chafe Kennedy, formerly of Palmerston North, died at the Waihi Hospital after a short illness, on September 6, and was buried at Morrinsville. He was in his 74th year.
     He attended the Campbell Street School in his young days and not long ago was a guest at the Campbell Street School Jubilee. He was well known on the rifle range and possessed many medals for his marksmanship. Mr Kennedy worked for Messrs Barraud and Abraham at Palmerston North and was well known in most farming districts as far as Napier.
     He was a veteran of the South African War. After his return to New Zealand, he took up farming at Kiwitahi, Morrinsville. Later in life he handed the farm over to his son, and then made his home in Whangamata, Bay of Plenty. Mr Kennedy was interested in racing and was a member of several clubs. He was also a member of the Whangamata Bowling Club.
     He leaves one son, Mr K. Kennedy, seven grandchildren, two brothers, Messrs I. C. Kennedy, of Lower Hutt, and W. Kennedy, of Auckland, and two sisters, Mesdames E. B. Mills, of Whangamata, and J. Ross, of Feilding. His wife predeceased him three years ago.

General Notes:Back in the late 40's - early 50's, Arthur & Georgina won the Art Union (todays equivelent of Lotto). They scooped the 1st prize of about £5000. At the time they were living in High Street, Taita, and their address and phone number were published in the local papers with details of the winning ticket.
The Post Office was delivering begging letters by the bag load for days. The number of people walking in off the street begging for money was so great that they had a policeman on their front gate turning people away. There were also many abusive phone calls from people that didnt get any reply to their begging letters.
The stress of this situation probably prompted their move to Foxton not long after.
