Fibromyalgia Therapy

Documented studies show that Fibromyalgia patients have a number of changes in their brain chemistry. They have an increase in a neurotransmitter called substance P, which increases their sensitivity to pain and they have a decrease in serotonin, a neurotransmitter which decreases their sensitivity to pain. They also have lower levels of circulation and do not have as good a delivery of glucose to the cells. Studies on massage therapy with Fibromyalgia patients show that the Fibromyalgia patients receiving massage have a balancing of these neurotransmitters. Their substance P decreases, thereby decreasing their pain sensitivity; and their serotonin increases, thereby increasing their tolerance to pain. Massage therapy also helps improve their circulation which better enables the body to deliver nutrients to the brain and the cells.

Neuromuscular Re-education

Neuromuscular re-education is working to change the way your brain and your muscles communicate. The disease of Fibromyalgia is characterized by pain in 18 specific points in the body. Right now your brain is sending messages to your muscles to tense and to hold that tension. NMR stimulates the muscles to send a new signal to the brain, prompting the brain to send a neurotransmitter signal to the muscles telling them they can relax. Included in your massage are techniques for PMS and TMJ (or jaw pain), which are both common problems associated with Fibromyalgia.

Stretching Techniques and General Relaxation Techniques

Strain counterstrain technique is a form of NMR used widely by osteopathic physicians. This is an excellent technique to use for patients who are having a great deal of pain and are unable to move their muscles comfortably.

THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE are extensive. Massage can be used to help preserve health and modify illness. It can work in conjunction with orthodox and complementary therapies and is in itself an enjoyable and healthy activity. As the popularity of massage increases, more opportunities are being identified for its use. We are beginning to realize why massage has such a deserved reputation as a therapy. Therapeutic massage is effective because it assists the normal functioning of the body and provides an emotional safety valve to reduce anxiety that health problems can provoke, relieving both physical and emotional discomfort.

Massage for Life

MASSAGE FOR ILLNESS. Traditional healthcare systems throughout the world recognize that massage can play an important part in treating illness. For many years, massage has been ignored by orthodox western medicine, but increasingly, medical practitioners have come to recognize the potential of massage therapy, especially in connection with those diseases of civilization, in which personal stress in acknowledged to be an important factor. In many such cases, orthodox treatments have achieved limited success, while holistic therapies involving massage have been of significant help.

MASSAGE FOR INJURY. The influence of massage on the circulation is very helpful in alleviating pain after accidents and injuries. Appropriate massage treatments help modify responses so that injuries are easier to bear and quicker to heal.

MASSAGE AND CHILDREN. We tend to think of stress as an adult problem, but sometimes they have their origins in childhood. Developing bodies can suffer discomforts normally called growing pains. Empathetic massage can help create physical and emotional space for growth. Although younger bodies are remarkably resilient and hard working, minor injuries should not be ignored. Massage provides ideal conditions for effective rest and fast repair so that problems are not carried forward into later life. Of these, the most common is injury to the neck, from impact sports to falling on to the head and shoulders.

MASSAGE AND THE ELDERLY. Massage is particularly valuable as a therapy for the problems associated with growing older. Regular massage gives confidence and helps facilitate new leisure activities, as well as attending to strains and minimizing potential injury. During illness or infirmity, massage is especially supportive, relieving pressure and assisting in circulation. It also helps to relieve the sense of physical isolation that often accompanies growing older.
