SPOKEN WORD / POETRY WORKSHOPS & PERFORMANCES FOR SCHOOLS & GROUPS
Spoken word artist, poet, emcee, and actor T.Paul Ste. Marie developed workshops in the art of performance poetry in 2001 after realizing the importance of bringing the WORD to life for students. His school performances & workshops, adjudicated by 150 teachers and education experts through ArtScan in Vancouver, are excellent for students ranging between grades 7 through to 12.

After his own personal revelation that when breath is given to otherwise page-flat words thereby giving them shape, texture, colour, flavour and music by the reader, poetry becomes the LIVING ELEMENT it was intended to be, he saw this as a valuable educational tool.

T.Paul's history spans the life of a troubled school student who found his release through poetry and theatre. His life of job-jumping and travel offer inspiration to his work and to the students participating in his workshops and performances. He has been a shoe shine boy, a blues club manager, a circus sideshow barker,  a doorman, a dresser for theatre companies from Toronto to Florida and more. His street life past also plays a role in his need to create a positive and exciting outlet for our youth who are encountered daily with violence, drug and alcohol abuse, bigotry, anger, disaffectednes and desensitization.

His school performances and workshops have won the critical accolades of thousands of  students from grades seven to twelve. He offers them proof positive live and up close via his high voltage verbiage and entertaining teaching methods that literature and poetry is exciting and alive and viable forms of artistic expression waiting for anyone to explore!

He combines his passion for live music and performance poetry on a weekly basis as host and producer of the 3 time award winning spoken word/music fusion open mic series THUNDERING WORD HEARD which is supported in part by the CANADA ARTS COUNCIL. There, he offers performers and audiences alike diversity in collaborations between music and poetry or these artforms on their own.

T.Paul has shared the stage with such notable poets and performers as the Beat Generation's TED JOANS, N.Y.C.'s TAYLOR MALI, storyteller extraordinairre IVAN E. COYOTE, International Slam Champs SHANE KOYCZAN & MIKE McGEE, internationally reknown poet BILL BISSETT, Canadian hip hop sensation SHANKINI, Canadian recording artist VEDA HILLE, actor/spoken word artist/director (and former "Cosby" kid) MALCOLM JAMAL WARNER, hip hop artist of SWEATSHOP UNION fame KYPRIOS, and many, many more!

His self published chapbooks of poetry BIRTH OF A NOTION and DOG AND POETRY SHOW are hot items in bookstores throughout Vancouver and South Western Ontario.

T.Paul also produces spoken word stages where they have never been seen before. In 2002, his THUNDERING WORD HEARD stage at NEW MUSIC WEST sold out all 250 seats at the Tom Lee Music Hall in downtown Vancouver rich with performers like KIA KIDIRI, SHANE KOYCZAN, MALCOLM JAMAL WARNER, C.R. AVERY and more. Since 2002, T.Paul has produced stages for the VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL STORYTELLING FESTIVAL and the VANCOUVER FOLK FESTIVAL. The Folk Fest had poets, for the first time in its history, on main stage opening for international stars like BILLY BRAGG, ANI DI FRANCO and SPEARHEAD.

His other projects which combine his emcee's gregariousness and his love for poetry include hosting a CBC television pilot on video poetry and spoken word titled "SPOKEN WORD HEARD" with his guests TIMMOTHY HUTTON, LESLIE NIELSEN, GORD DOWNIE nad others. T.Paul has been a guest on many a CBC radio show, MOJO radio, SHAW TV , CITY TV and CBC's zeDTV.

When not waxing poetic, T.Paul runs his own company TWH PRODUCTIONS, PROMOTIONS & DESIGNS, offering promotional tools and publicity to other artists, creating posters and handbills for events and producing Spoken Word stages, Cabarets, Vaudeville shows, and circus sideshows accross the province.
PERFORMANCES

T.Paul presents a performance which will poetically reach Midle/Junior secndary students via his energetic, character driven verbiage and rhythms. His poetry’s subject matter is universal, touching on timely and commonly felt issues in life. T.Paul’s rapport with school audiences invites their interaction during his show as he asks them questions about their knowledge of poetry, the importance of reading, and the need to understand forms. This offers some indication on what direction to take the performances and offers the teachers present some insight as to where to put the focus when relating poetry to their students. He will bring with him  current books of poetry that the students may look at. T.Paul also plays the occasional CD containing the work of today’s finest word slingers in order to open the doors to more current poetical forms.

His performances are perfect for english classes, drama classes, and even sociology classes. T.Paul will have study guides available for all of the teachers along with worksheet handouts that can be copied and worked on by the students following the performance.

T.Paul brings poetry to a level that everyone can relate to and most importantly enjoy and appreciate. The students will be left with the desire to create their own poetry, as well as an interest in reading more of other people’s work.
