INFORMATION: Sun Conure (Arantinga Solstitialis)
Range: From Guianas and southeastern Venezuela, extending into northeastern Brazil.
Distinguishing features:  Unlike the Jandaya, yellow markings also cover a wide area of the wings.

Young birds:
Have a paler beak than adults, and a wider distribution of green feathering. Length: 30 cm (12 in)
Relatively unknown inaviculture until 1971, the Sun Conure has rapidly become established and prices have fallen accordingly.  In spite of its attractive this species has a particularly penetrating call, which could lead to neighbor's complaints in highly urbanized areas.  Pairs will generally nest freely; as many as seventeen young from a single pair over an eighteen-month period have been reported.

Meet Baby our Sun Conure

Sun Conure although they can be quite noisy, are the least noisy of the conure family. I'm sure that most owners of birds from the parrot or conure family will agree that this member of the species is entertaining and enjoyable. I have always been partial to dogs and would tolerate cats and other pets such as the rabbits, hamsters, parakeets, guinea pigs etc that my children and wife have taken in over the years, but I never had an interest in birds until Baby. Several year ago a Golden Retriever we had named Ulysses passed away and we decided we would no longer have any pets since the loss of a loving pet is very saddening. We soon began enjoying a new found freedom from pet ownership until the evening when we became members of Baby's family. I say Baby's family because that is what we have become, her children or family. My wife, mother-in-law, myself and most of my family members cater to her every need. She is never far from the company of someone during the time I am working and when I come home she is with me everywhere I go whether in the house or yard. One evening my second oldest of four children, Barbara, arrived at our home and asked if we would be interested in a Sun Conure for a pet. Barbara has had an Amazon Parrot and a Nanday Conure (one of the larger of the conure family) for pets for several years and she had been asked by a friend if she knew someone who would give the bird a good home. Baby became a member of our family that evening and has ruled the home ever since. On the occasions when Barbara's friend inquires about Baby, Barbara is quick to reply " We should have it so good, the bird has two cages plus a small cage and is pampered just like her name implies, Like a baby". Baby and I are inseparable, If I am outside cutting the grass Baby is on the patio, if I am in the garage working Baby is right there. Baby says several words such as bye, hello, night (for good night) what and a complete phrase "I love you." At times I wonder if she is simply mimicking sounds since she seems to associate some words with actions. For example when my wife comes to me kiss me to say goodbye as she is leaving for work, and if baby is present, Baby will speak out "bye" as if she knows that the word means goodbye. Likewise if I have baby on my shoulder and I am going to bed I will kiss my wife and before I have a chance to say goodnight, Baby will start saying "Night" and throw kisses. Something to think about huh.
