 Why Toastmasters?

Can you always say what you really mean?  Are you a bit apprehensive about speaking out in meetings?  If so, you’re in good company.

Speaking in public is the number one fear of most people.  It outranks even the fear of death! Most really successful people have learned  to control their fear of speaking before groups.   Now you can conquer your anxiety and become more confident and articulate.

Toastmasters will show you how to become a confident, effective speaker through an enjoyable, thoroughly professional, educational program.  Adults learn best by doing, and that’s how Toastmasters works.  It provides a safe environment for you to start speaking.

The Toastmasters Program

Your journey starts with the basic Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Program, a series of speech projects designed to help you learn and practice basic public speaking skills.  Each project builds on the preceding assignments.  Completing the basic manual earns you the Competent Toastmaster Award from Toastmasters International!

The opportunities do not stop when you complete the basic manual.  The advanced program series offers challenging projects geared to your specific career needs.  Able Toastmaster and Distinguished Toastmaster Awards await those who complete specific  leadership and service requirements.

Meetings consist of three main activities:

SPEECHES:  At each meeting, selected members give prepared speeches.

EVALUATIONS:  Each speaker receives immediate feedback in the form of evaluation by a fellow club member.  Evaluations are constructive and helpful, and are based on specific guidelines provided in the manual for each speech.

TABLE TOPICS:  The Table Topics session provides an opportunity to practice critical impromptu speaking skills which are so important in business.   Other important roles in each meeting include Chairman, Grammarian, and Timer.  Members take turns practicing their listening and leadership skills when they fill these essential functions.

Every Toastmaster receives a monthly magazine,  The Toastmaster which features articles, ideas, opinions, and techniques which are helpful and informative in the areas of communication and leadership.  Many members think that the magazine alone is worth the price of membership..

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

If you are interested in gaining leadership experience, you may choose to serve as a club officer.  Each club has a president, and vice presidents of education, membership, and public relations, as well as secretary, treasurer and sergeant-at-arms.  Additional opportunities to practice leadership are available at area, district and international levels.
