Who is Mary Baker Eddy?
Let me explain ...by Janet Roach

Who is Mary Baker Eddy?
Mary Baker Eddy is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

When did she live?
1821 - 1910

Where did she live?
In the United States of America in the northeast, the part called "New England."

When Mary was little she lived on a farm. She was the youngest in the family. There were three boys, and three girls.
Mary's family was very religious. They prayed to God every day.
Mary was often sick when she was little. She went to school on days when she was well enough.
When Mary was twenty-two years old, she fell in love and got married. She was very happy for a while but ...
soon her husband got very sick and died. She was all alone and was going to have a baby.
Soon her baby was born. She named him George. But Mary often was not well enough to care for him.

For many years Mary had sorrows and severe trials as well as lack of health. She wanted so much to know God and to find an answer to human woe.She read her Bible and prayed to understand God.

Then one cold day in 1866, when she fell on the ice and got badly hurt.
Mary asked for her Bible and read about one of Christ Jesus' healings. Jesus had healed people, and Mary suddenly saw that she could be healed too.
And she was!

Mary wanted to know how she was healed. So for the next three years she continued her deep search of the Bible. She studied the healings of Christ Jesus and prayed to God.
She began to understand spiritual healing through God. She gained a wonderful new view of what God is. She called her discovery "Christian Science."
She was able to show others how they could have a better life. She taught others about God and healed them as Jesus healed.
She started writing about what she learnt of this Science that Jesus practiced.

In 1875 she published Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the textbook of Christian Science. All this was her work as Discoverer of Christian Science.

And it all started with one woman, Mary Baker Eddy, who learned a great deal about God and healed a great many people ...then she worked the rest of her life so that others could know God better and learn to heal and help as Jesus did.
