...details of Noah(TM), the font surgeon...
|
What's Noah(TM)?
|
| Noah(TM) is a native Type 1 font editor. It can be used to open, change
and save PostScript Type 1 (PFB) fonts and their metric (PFM) files. Single
and multiple master fonts are supported (multiple master metrics not yet,
please help me, if you know something about .MMM format), but be careful
with the other subtypes like hybrid, composite, etc. fonts.
Noah(TM) can be used to reanimate a defective font file, if you can
open it correctly. Some types of errors can be corrected, but you should
know what you're doing.
This font editor isn't like the rest. No dragging of nodes and curves.
No many things you may find convenient. Noah(TM) can be described best
as a font disassembling and displaying mechanism, where you can change
the code contained within a font, and you can reassemble it if you like.
But unlike editing the font code with a text editor, Noah(TM) helps you
see the results immediately. |
|
Why Noah(TM)?
|
| There are good software products like Fontographer and FontLab for
editing fonts, but in order to let the user drag anchor points and Bézier
vectors they sacrifice all curve-drawing subroutines defined in a font
program, resulting a significant growth in font size. In addition, they
can make unwanted changes anywhere in font program, and last but not least
they cost much, unlike Noah(TM).
The idea behind Noah(TM) is that you have a professionally designed
font that almost (but not fully) satisfy your needs. And you want
to do a small modification inside while keeping everything else intact.
You can do that by disassembling & editing & assembling font. Or
you can do it with Noah(TM).
This program opens and saves only PostScript Type 1 fonts in binary
format (*.PFB). Noah(TM) can display characters and subroutines (also with
Flex) in single and multiple master fonts. And keeps all these in their
original form. You will probably appreciate this. |
